Question about canceling exam through Prometric or just not showing up

I am scheduled to take FAR on friday, the last day on my NTS. After several unforseen circumstances, I am just not ready AT ALL to take it. I know I am forfeiting my fees and will have to reapply for a new NTS, but I figure this is the best option so I don’t wait all the way until the end of Sept to see the failing grade and then reapply.

Here is my question. The NTS says that if you cancel within a certain amount of time you forfeit your fees and have to reapply. So I got on and tried to cancel my appointment and they are trying to charge me $88.

Do I have to pay that? What happens if I just don’t show? I don’t get why I should pay them that much money for not taking my exam. I’m already losing my examination fees.

    BEC- 73, 73, 80
    REG- 74, 83
FAR- 50(didn't study), 76 (<--How the heck did that happen?)
    AUD- 71, 71, 79!!!!!
    Finished!!

I'm sure it costs that because you took a testing spot from someone else. If they had that spot filled because you signed up for it they weren't able to get someone else who would take the exam to sit there. Basically it's just like a doctors office if you don't call and cancel in time you have to pay a fee because you cost them additional money because they couldn't get someone else in that time slot. I'm sure by you canceling that means that the AICPA won't pay them their portion of the exam fees for providing the testing facilities. Wow this sounds super jumbled i hope that made some sort of sense. I'm not sure what happens if you don't show up…I would call and ask NASBA or AICPA. I went and sat for FAR one time with 4 hours of studying…hence my awesome 58….

FAR- 72, 65,67, 53, 75 (truth be known the 53 was with 4 hours of studying)
    AUD-58, 62, 72, 74, 74, 75
took 5 years but I'm DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the response. I think I might just call Prometric and ask them why I have pay to cancel. It is actually their confirmation that says canceling would forfeit fees, so maybe they can clarify.

Until last night I intended on cramming all week and then just taking it anyway. But after about 2 hours of studying last night, I realized I didn't know anything. My studying was interrupted for about 2 weeks earlier this month when my stepfather passed away. In addition, my kids leave for three weeks on Saturday, and I can't justify cramming the few hours I'm not at work, for an exam I will not pass, instead of spending the time with them. The worst part is that it takes so long to get the score, and I want to make sure I can schedule the day I want to retake it. If my NTS didn't end on that day, I would have pushed my date back earlier this month.

It's $88. I suggest just paying it and be done with it. I agree with keeptrying regarding the reasoning.

I didn't show up for BEC and it just showed up as “No Show” on my report… that's it. Of course I sacrificed my fees and all that and had to pay again for my next exam. But I wasn't charged since I didn't cancel. I think the cancelation fee is more geared towards people who are rescheduling their exam, not just canceling.

I was going through an ugly divorce and I was laid off about 2 weeks before my exam, so canceling my exam was the last thing on my mind at the time.

kandisjoy- Did you have to wait until scores were released to reapply?

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm just going to call Prometric and NASBA and find out exactly what I have to do. Yes, it's only $88, but considering I'm already forfeiting the fees I've already paid, and will be paying them again shortly, I'd rather not pay it if I don't have to.

I'm pretty sure the $88 fee is to reschedule at the last second, NOT a cancellation fee. The “fee” to cancel at the last second would be to forfeit your exam fee.

I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.

88 is to reschedule. I did that with 2 days before my exam,to reschedule later in the same week. When does ur NTS expire? Just leave it as is and do the “no show” unless u want to take it sometime in July- Aug window.

I think if you “no show” then you can't retake that same section in the same window, but if you cancel, you just need to reapply for a new NTS, and assuming it gets approved fast enough, you could theoretically reschedule for the same window.

If you didn't show up just contact your nasba coordinator and fill out an unborn form. You obviously have to pay again to take the exam but it's not as much as the first time.

kristen – I'm sorry, I'm not sure. I took a break from taking exams after my No Show, so I didn't pay attention.

    @kristen1479

i missed my AUD exam on 28 Feb this year because I live in Canada and i don't know how to drive, i simply missed the very early morning bus to US for my exam. my NTS expired on a later day of March which is equivalent to expiration day of 28 Feb (no exam on March as we all know)., i reapplied my AUD exam in the very early day of march (3rd or 4th), no any issues. so i inferred that as long as your exam date passes, you might be able to reapply for the same exam. i could be wrong, but it is worth to try if your exam date passes.

good luck to all of us trying hard for the CPA exams!
