I took REG in Jan/Feb and got a 65. One mistake I made, I didn’t take the research seriously enough. I might have gotten it wrong. Passing rates were 41%

I took REG in APR/MAY and got a 79. I know I got the research question right this time. I really do believe that question is worth more than just 6.5-8 points. It might be worth 10!

Anyway, I also have a theory that Q2 passing will be much higher for all sections due to the fact that there was some type of glitch with the 1st Quarter in 2011. I think this is the reason they have delayed releasing the passing rates.

Research is free points. You throw in a couple different key word searches, read a couple of paragraphs, and you have your answer. Easy as 123, simple as Do Re Mi.

@mini …exactly … to me it was free points that took 2-5 minutes to do, no preperation no stress. Pop in some words read a few paragraphs bada bing ..done.

no one knows how much its worth 1-10 points, but 2 research question on sims worth 14-20 points is like a jackpot.

@kb24– my husband graduated from UT in May 2010. He did the 5 year program earning his undergrad and grad degrees in Accounting. He passed all exams on the first try in a 3 month time period. UT has one of the top ranked accounting programs behind Brigham Young, I could be slightly off with the ranking but I believe they are in the top 5 as well as A&M. The homework my husband had was comparable to the CPA exam as well as the professors really emphasized the CPA exam. He would be better suited to talk about it but he used only Becker and his lowest grade was an 87 in AUD. He scored an 88 in REG, 91 in FAR and 93 in BEC….he also made studying his full time job while in his last semester of college. He was only taking 2 classes that he considered more blow off type classes than anything. I also realized how difficult the test was so I left him alone when he was studying as well as went away on the weekends so he could have the house to himself. I really feel the UT program is phenomenal and they really prepare their accounting grads to take the CPA exam.

    REG-80, 77, 77
    BEC-67, 68, 71, 67, 71, 74, 71, 74, 72, 77
FAR- 72, 65,67, 53, 75 (truth be known the 53 was with 4 hours of studying)
    AUD-58, 62, 72, 74, 74, 75
took 5 years but I'm DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I graduated from UT – Dallas. Our pass rates from the link I provided earlier were relatively low , especially compared to UT- Austin. UTD has a CPA Exam Review course partnership with Becker, which gives counts for 6 credit hours. I believe they have changed providers this year, but the concept is the same. I saved my last 6 hours of my MS degree for the review course. It was likely hitting two birds with one stone for sure. I am convinced that the skewed results are due to the demographics of the students taking the exams. UTD had a very high amount of ESL (english as second language) students, and I believe there is a learning curve for the exam attempts necessary to pass. I am not discounting the ESL students ability to pass, but I would hypothesize that it would be extremely more difficult to pass this exam if you don't really understand the language as your primary one. I envy those ESL students whom are bi-lingual and are CPAs. I could only imagine trying to take a CPA exam in mandarin-chinese, yeah right.

Thanks for the info. I was just curious. I went to U of H from 1/04 to 12/05 so it was during the very early stages of the computerized exam which I think began in early 2004. The only one of my professors who even talked about the exam at all was one I had for 3 classes. He was a former auditor who had started doing SOX consulting work and teaching part time after 20 years with KPMG. My other professors all had more academic backgrounds. Anyway, this guy didn't talk about it a lot but did use some of the Gleim questions on his exams. I remember thinking at the time that these questions were ridiculous. If only I'd known what I was in for.

I was happy with the education I got at U of H, but I didn't do any comparison to other programs. Unless I'd wanted to leave my family for large chunks of time for two years, U of H was my only option. Rice's business department dropped their accounting program several years ago. My daughter went to UT so I know it's a great school. She was a history major, though, so I didn't get to know much about the business school. I do know that the level of academic qualifications for both it and A&M are a lot higher with the automatic admission of the top 10% of class. I know people whose children got admitted to both but had to wait for a year even though they were in the top 10% because there are so many people trying to get in.

@whynotme – I think you may be right about ESL students having more trouble with the exam. U of H has a large number of Asian students in their MBA and accounting programs. I got to know several of them well and noticed that some had trouble grasping material in auditing and taxation. My auditing professor is the one who used the Gleim questions, and I think that they had trouble with the subtleties of the wording of questions. I'm not sure what the issue in taxation was but think it had something to do with a lack of familiarity with details of American life based on the questions they asked in class.

    AUD 4/15/11 - 85

I'm not sure if other states display this listing of passing rates. Try to navigate your state board's website and see if you can find this.

If anyone is taking the CPA exam in the Dallas area, I would look up the live classes for Becker. Liliana Hickman-Riggs is an insanely good teacher of the review course, and they give you the materials so you can self-study too. I am not trying to endourse her by any means. I merely used that course, and came out on top. I went into the exam thinking I had no shot, now I'm a CPA (unofficially….until my paperwork clears).
