Just found out I failed REG once again. I went from a 72 to a 57….How does this even happen? I’m very discouraged as I’m sure many of you on this site may be. Trying to pick back up and pass BEC this window. It will be my third attempt with it. My first round with BEC I made a 72 and the second a 68. I started my job at a public accounting firm so I definitely think that has had a lot to do with it and I am so out of study mode after only being graduated since May. I tried to hit it hard tonight and got a good solid 4-5 hours of study time in. How do I keep this up? Working long days and being out of town take so much out of you. I know it can be done, but I just need some motivation and will power along with lots of support. I am also trying to plan a wedding and build a house while trying to pass 3 exams before the end of May. Doubting that is possible at the moment. Had a bit of a breakdown this morning after seeing my score but I’m trying to pick myself back up and make the best of it. Watch out BEC!

Over studying is not good either.

so from what I recall in psychology, we tend to remember the first and last things and not the things inbetween.

The way I study is, I spend 30 minutes srudying, 10 minutes watching TV, repeat. Every 30 minute interval is a start and a stop, and I retain information better that way. Contrary to what might seem would happen, while I'm taking my mind off and watching that 10 minute of TV, I'm recharging my brain, resting it, and letting what I've just learned sink in.

Maybe this trick will work for you.

Being tired doesn't help one bit that's for sure. Your brain Needs rest just as much as you need rest!

I got a 73 and a 69 respectively on my Reg exams. Losing the motivation fast. I have FAR coming up on April 3rd and then going to try taking another in that Q2 window. Anyone recommend taking REG again at the end of that Q2?

Being tired definitely does not help anything, but I've got to figure out how to work through that tiredness. Any recommendations on being able to stay up later and effectively study would be great.

@jrd – The ELL approach is what I've learnt to adopt in studying for these exams and it has helped me, so far. I get a good chunk of studying done around 4:30 – 5am for about an hour and a half before I leave for work. During lunch hour, I try squeezing in at least 30 minutes of studying. I would either review my hand written notes or attempt a handful of MCQ's. I put in another hour and a half to two hours after work. Remember, it's all about quality and not quantity. I remember, studying for FAR, at times it'd take me 2 hours to go through 15 mcq's!

I would say the days that you have the motivation to study go at it hard. And the days you find yourself making excuses just force yourself to study. Even if its just doing 5 to 10 questions at a time. I find that if I force myself to study and just do the questions in small chunks it does not feel as bad. On those nights I will have the TV on in the background.

Try to figure out when you study the best. Like Cracked mentioned above I have noticed that I do my best during the early hours of the morning. There is nothing going on on TV, Facebook or twitter. Everyone is sleeping. I wake up at 4am (I call it stupid o'clock) and study. After dragging myself out of bed at that hour it would be dumb of me to goof off.

I also try to get some studying done during my lunch hour. It can be just rewriting formulas or working through 30 questions if I can. Next week I am going to start staying at work for at least 2 hours and study. When I travel I use that time to study as well because my commute to and from the client is shorter and I dont have to worry about cooking dinner and cleaning. Depending on who I travel with I will be upfront on only going to dinner one night and staying in to study.

Its hard to figure out how to make it work but once you do stick to it. I religiously stick to my schedule because just one morning of sleeping in will ruin it for me. Not sure why that is.

One way to make things better, is double chocolate cake with a few pints of ice cream and chocolate syrup. Eat it all up and down it some milk. That will give you more than enough strength and energy to study for the retake. And if still feeling depressed, throw in a few bottles of Jack Daniels.

I would do 50 MCQs, and give myself an hour to complete them. I would typically finish them in 35-45 minutes, then watch TV until the hour was up. At the top of the next hour, I do another set.

    REG - 90 (08/2014) - Study Time = 6 days
    FAR - 89 (10/2014) - Study Time = 9 days
    BEC - 83 (11/2014) - Study Time = 4 days
    AUD - 89 (01/2015) - Study Time = 2 days

    Final score released - 2/4/15
    Application mailed - 2/5/15
    Licensed CPA - 2/12/15

I have to give you my 2 cents, to give you motivation. I should have taken these exams in 2009, when i first became eligible and also the year my son was born. Now i have 2 kids, ages 5 and 3. I am married and I work in public accounting. I failed the first three times, in August and November 2013, then February 2014. Albeit, my scores were close.

I finally decided to drill down and do this. I passed in the last two windows.

My last exam (BEC), my daughter was so sick the night before the exam; I didn't sleep at all because I was taking care of her. I still nailed the test.

I am taking AUD next Tuesday. Tax season is in full effect. I shouldn't even be on here typing it is so hectic. But I have to add that I have barely slept the last three nights in a row, because my daughter has been very ill again. Nonetheless , I have been working a full 8 charge hours and getting my 3 hours per day study time and I intend on doing the same today. I am so determined now to get these tests done. People have told me that it is a matter of determination and I am now sold on that.

I can feel my throat getting sore and scratchy. I am probably going to get sick myself in the next few days. But I don't have time for that. I want to get done with these. If I can do it, then I know anybody can. As soon as I take this exam, I'll have to make up for lost time, so I will work approximately 14 days in a row, 10-12 hour days. But if I don't get over this hump, who knows, maybe my marriage will be ruined. A normal person can't work like this for too long, something will break.

Learning to not get enough sleep is what my biggest challenge is. 10:00 o'clock rolls around and I'm done for. Most of the time I don't even get a lunch hour to study during. That would be nice. You guys are awesome and sure do help out on the motivation end!

After a long day of work, I'm also pretty much done. At 6pm, I crank up the coffeepot and then go another 3-4 hours. Unfortunately, this starts a vicious cycle as I stay up late (due to coffee) and then wake up tired (not enough hours of sleep). On Day 2, I start the whole process over again. Coffee, coffee, coffee……
