Hi Anyone know the break down of relavant work experience I need to get Licensed in NY?

like what % of time must be auditing or % of time doing financial statements etc? I read some where it was like 70% auditing? I’ll call them tomorrow but I’d rather get an idea today.

I have 10+ years of private industry experience and worked under two currently licensed CPAs (just checked their board status), which I feel is relavant work experience. I’m grandfathered in the old rules so I need 2 years of exp…

    Thanks in advance

Hey Herbieherb, Did you get a chance to call them? I think you're good to go. NYS changed it's work experience requirements back in 2009. I was also grandfathered into the old rules (registered in 2002).

Here's the link and below is the work experience requirements :https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpalic.htm

An applicant who meets New York's 150 semester hour education requirements for licensure must present evidence, satisfactory to the State Board for Accountancy, of one year of full-time experience (or the part-time equivalent) providing accounting services or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, compilation, management advisory, financial advisory, tax, or consulting skills under the supervision of a certified public accountant licensed in one of the U.S. jurisdictions or a public accountant licensed in New York State. Acceptable experience may be earned in a public accounting firm, government, private industry or an educational institution.

An applicant for licensure who met the eligibility requirements for grand-parenting under New York's 120 semester hour education requirements must document at least two years of full time experience (or the part-time equivalent), as described in the paragraph above. An applicant who is eligible for grand-parenting may choose to take the additional course work required to meet the 150 semester hour requirements and thereby qualify for a one year reduction in the experience requirement. Such an applicant must have his/her schools submit official transcripts documenting the additional course work to the Education Department for review when he/she submits documentation experience documentation (Forms 4 and 4B)

An applicant who was approved to sit for the examination based on 15 years of experience acceptable to the State Board for Accountancy in lieu of meeting the education requirements does not need to document any additional experience.

Full-time employment is considered to be a 5-day, 35-40 hour week, excluding overtime. Acceptable part-time (no less than 20 hours per week) experience will be considered on the basis of one week of experience for every two weeks worked.

Hi Gina, thanks for the info. I didnt call and did some research instead. You are right about 2009, supposedly they did away with the 75% audit rule and that any work under a CPA qualifies. The work exp is outlined in that 4b Form… I will call on Monday tho to verify…I should have my license soon lols!!! I will bug my current boss or ex boss after tax season tho…

Not sure what I should do. I already talked to my ex boss -I have 3 years under him, that already qualifies me… and he said he will have no problems signing off on my exp. I really don't want my current boss or the CFO that I work under, where I have 8 years racked up working under their supervision to know what I'm up to…because most likely im going to quit and look for a higher paying job…I haven't even told my current boss I passed everything. But I think its better to claim 11 years of expereince rather than just 3 on the forms…

I know this must be a common occurance in the CPA world, after you pass you ask them to sign off and notorize your work experience forms, then you quit after for greener fields?? My old boss had to lay me off in 2002 after 9-11 so it was involuntary and we parted ways very friendly… it just puts me in an awkward position. Any suggestions?

Just to be on the safe side, call the board to verify. According to the form, you should list all prior jobs, but only claim the one that fulfills the work exp requirement and can be verified by an active CPA. If your ex-boss has no problems signing you off, definitely go to him first. You're actually in a good spot because you have two options. I only have one option – one ex-boss (worked 5yrs). Thankfully, we parted on good terms. I can't go into details, but there is another ex-boss prior to this one (worked 4 yrs), who can't sign me off due to some “technicalities.” 🙂

@Gina. The cpa unit at nysed confirmed the experience qualifies…even any pre 2009 experience. So I think we are both good to go! It will be reviewed when both my form 4 and form 4b are received.

@Herbieherb, that's great. I also called them because I wasn't sure if I had to re-pay the fees (paid back in 2002). I don't have to pay any additional fees and all I have to do is submit the 4/4b forms. I'm going to wait until after the 18th to submit the form to the ex-boss. I don't want my form to get lost in the “last week of the tax season” shuffle. 🙂

Don't you need to submit Form 1 along with form 4 and 4b, or can you submit form 1 anytime before you pass them all?

Hi James, no…you filled out form 1/sent payment etc to be eligible to register with the state and start the whole process. If you never filled out 1, you wouldn't be able to sit for exam.

    only after passing all parts,

you fill out form 4 and employer fills out form 4b (sent seperately) and the board has both together it will.take about three weeks and if all goes well you will see your name on the online verification system, which is updated daily. 2days after that your wall certificate parchment and registration license will arrive in mail. The cpa unit is very responsive if you call or email about your status. They always got back to me with relevant feedback on a timely manner.

No ethics exam is required either, and CPE requirements start after 3years. Wish I knew all this 8 months ago 🙂

Thanks for the info. I wish they would just provide a step by step and say if you are at this stage you need to submit this or that. I think they make the process a lot more confusing than it is.

I am still confused because I never sent them a Form 1 or paid the $377 or whatever amount it is. I know I never sent it because it needs to be notarized and I never got anything notarized. I applied online and sent them my picture and everything but I'm not sure if NY needs a separate application and money.

Oh well all I know is I'm almost done passing them all. I guess I'll get this all sorted out when I try to get my license.

So after researching and inquiring, I confirmed what I had originally thought which is that Form 1 does NOT need to be submitted until you are ready for the state to review your experience requirements after you have passed all parts.

I know of people that have made this mistake. If you want, you can delay having to send the state the $377 by not sending it until you find out you passed your last section.

I haven't sent it in because I'd rather hold onto the money and pay when I am closer to getting my license. Hopefully if anyone was as confused as I was about the NY process this helped clear it up.
