I am sitting for REG tomorrow and I need some help with the research tab. I have passed three exams as of now and I have not been even able to get a single research question right. I mean, I was not able to find it at all.I just want to know excatly how you guys handle this..I know I am doing something wrong.

So, lets say I want to look for treatment for capital loss- individual situation

I type in capital loss in the search box

It gives me a lot of links- options

So after this when I hit the link or the option, most of them are blank, nothing in it

The ones that shows up has a line or to in it, totally not related to what I am looking for

    It mostly says subchater….

How do you guys proceed from this step

Any suggestion would be helpful Thanks

I think the practice sims on the AICPA website, and maybe even the ones in Wiley or Becker…the research database only shows the sections related to answers to the practice sims. So you might get blank areas because its not actually a complete database of the entire IRC. On the real exam, the entire database is included.

I've been using the splitscreen (personally like splitting it horizontal, not vertical), and haven't seen any info about replaced or superseded topics, but could be it's there and I missed it. For some reason this is happening, but as was mentioned above, the table of contents is good for finding the info, just maybe not as quickly. I went through many of the research tabs and have been able to work on them without the keyword search functioning as I was used to (worked well for FAR and AUD), so although this may be annoying, it's not detrimental.

I did get a message a couple of times that I was clicking on a subtopic that does not have to do with the solution, and that on the real exam I would get the entire database – but that is not the message I got when I typed something into the keyword search and selected one of the options….

My Sim research tabs are now working normally…weird, but great.

I took REG on 07/01/11. I found the best way to search for research topics was to use the advanced search function.

If you have a general idea what the question is asking about, for example foreign income tax credit, you can type those string of words together and it will do a search with those specific words close together. Then I further refined the process with the search within function.

I did not know that the sample tests on the AICPA website did not show the whole database. I'm glad I read this forum.

For instance, I tried a Becker review that referred to a Code Section in the 6000s. The AICPA only goes up to Section 2210 in its practice website.
