Hey guys – so I received my REG score and it was a tragic failure. It really was tragic. I went from a 70 to a 57! Anyways, I remember sitting in the exam and wondering where in the world are these questions coming from. I honestly felt prepared for the major concepts, but like I’ve been reading on this forum, it seems as if the REG 2011 exam asked a lot of very detailed questions that I may or may not have read in my Becker book. My plan is to sit down and read the entire book front to back, as many times as I can between now and May. The exam seemed to pull a lot of “one liners” from the book that I simply just did not know. And the simulations that I had…..FAIL! LOL! I can laugh about it now, but I have one last chance to get it before I lose credit for AUD.

For all of you out there that struggled with the 2011 REG exam, here’s to us brushing ourselves off and tackling this beast next time around. Cheers!

    Audit - 74, 74, 75, Lost Credit, 87(retake)
    BEC - 65, 70, 76
    FAR - 48, 66, 72, 76
    REG - 65, 70, 57, 69, 70, 71, 77

My suggestion is to start over with Yaeger for REG. Use the Becker book and lectures as a reference.

    Good Luck!

@sthrnbimmerchic Im prob not the someone you'd solicit advice on Reg for if you knew my history w/ it, but I do have more experience than I'd like to admit. My scores were very similar to yours, and I did use Beckers, so here's my 2cents on the matter.

Now, you may have a different learning style than mine, but I wouldn't waste my time w/ reading. Particularly because if you've studied for it a few times, it won't be engaging enough. I'd do as many questions as possible, after a quick spin through the lectures and skimming the chapter. If you've already got the Becker questions memorized, buy Gliem's software or any other test bank.

Also, what worked for me when I passed my first round was using Becker's Final Review backwards. I'd go through it first to brush up, and then hit any topics that I didn't have solid. But if you feel like you really need to go through all the material thoroughly, change up the book or or materials. I'd also recommend flipping through Deborah Hopkins book, You can Pass the CPA exam.

At least thats how I got through my EPIC battle w/ REG:

    8/08 =68

    11/08 =74

    2/09 = 64

    4/08 =76

    1/11= 75

    .

Keep at it, the end is near.

I just took the exam on the last window and I would say to focus at least 40% of your time on corporate taxation. I mean, EVERY single topic about corporate taxation will be tested, even the most obscure ones. Also review the ethics and professional responsibilities portion, as I see a lot of people skip over that material. The sims…………the sims are BRUTAL and probably none of the CPA review courses will totally prepare for the sims, but try to make as many sims as possible to better the odds. Flashcards also help for REG (as in AUD) because there is a lot of memorization involved, including weird exceptions, some important phaseout, deductions, etc. I used Becker 2011 and complemented with the Wiley book.

    FAR 88 - BEC 86 - AUD 90 - REG 85

I definitely used tons of flash cards for REG, and that helped immensely. I also used Yaeger CRAM and found it very helpful for REG. I would recommend highly- the business law notes that came with the Yaeger CRAM were truly worth their weight in gold and I can guarantee those played highly into my recent passing grade.

    AUD - 92
    FAR - 73, 82
    REG - 72, 82
    BEC - 84 DONE!!!!!! 🙂

I'm glad I found this post. I feel the exact same way you do. I just got my failing REG score…after passing the other 3 sections on the first try, and actually studying hard for REG so I could go one and done with each, I was baffled and shocked to receive a 67. I know it was the sims that did me in. The 1 topic I know for a fact Becker dedicated exactly 1.5 pages to was the topic of 3 of 7 sims. I prayed at least 2 (LOL) were pre-test and figured the curve would be enough to get me to at least 75. WRONG! That new 40% weighting is brutal.

So from now until May I'm going through Becker again and I just purchased the Gleim multiple choice problems, which was around $50. In my case, I had done flash cards and memorization and it wasn't enough to pass…so I'm going to really focus on understanding the concepts.

Good luck in your re-studying!! We can do this, we just got unlucky the first time around 😉

Thanks, ericakp! Glad to see someone else who felt like the same way I did. A score drop like mine obviously shows that the exam questions have been changed up quite a bit. That's ok though, we will blow it out the water next time around!
