So I applied @ H&R block to work part time. Yes, I know they start EVERYBODY at minimum wage regardless of education and experience. Yes I realize they are not as nice a job as working for say a small tax office or CPA but basically I am just looking to build confidence because I have friends who have asked me to prepare their personal and small business taxes and I just won’t do it…having passed REG certainly doesn’t make me qualified to file tax returns for my brothers flooring business, etc.

So I decided I will try the “fast food chain” of Tax prep for a couple of years before I will agree to do anybody’s returns on my own. And even then I may not be ready to do it, but I’ll be able to make a better judgement right?

Anyway I passed their test that exempts you from going to “tax school” (woopie). They called me all excited please fill out the job application ASAP. OK.

You have to answer a billion questions and I laughed out loud when I read “Have you ever dreamed of becoming a CPA?”

Gee, now that you mention it!

Aside from the giggle does anybody here do taxes as their own side business? What do you think makes a person qualified to be a preparer on their own?

I remember as a little girl, my grandfather who was a bank manager did EVERYBODYs taxes at the kitchen table every night from Jan-April: Aunts, Cousins, neighbors, coworkers. I always wanted to grow up and be like him. Sadly I’m guessing that it was much more simple 40 years ago LOL.

i was waiting for the part where you tell us how you got the job or you didn't get the job. So did you get the job? lol I own a gas station and i been doing my income and business taxes for couple of years. I basically use turbotax for personal and business. I have a S corp, with the software its pretty much plugging in the figures and tweaking around a little bit. Others have asked me to do their business tax, but i have refused. Just incase i mess something up, if I mess up my own its fine, i rather not scew someone else taxes up. Since IRS does not play play around. lol

I took the assessment test online a few days before I took REG in May. I figured the tax questions were more MCQ's to get ready for REG. I think you needed an 80 to be exempt from tax school and I got an 85 or something. The recruiter called me Thursday night and said the next step is to fill out the online application so its only been a day or 2 and I'd bet I don't hear anything until the 2nd or 3rd week of September at the very soonest.

Whenever you tell people you are working on the CPA their first comment is “so you can do my taxes?” People are really clueless as to how many other careers CPAs have. lol!

If you want to do taxes on your own, or as a contracted temp help for a CPA firm or something, you need to be a CPA or an enrolled agent. Enrolled agent means you have the CTEC certification, bonded for at least $5,000 and registered with the IRS. I think there is also a compentancy test to get registered with the IRS, but its not available yet? I've been looking into this too, and my friend who is studying for the CPA and has the CTEC certification said its a joke compared to REG! Lol. I visited my state tax board website and it tells u the what/where/how of becoming an enrolled agent.

Don't sell yourself short, mla. If you passed REG, you probably know more than most.

Another way to make contacts — get on small nonprofit boards as a volunteer. They are always looking for treasurers. You can get experience with payroll, 990s, answering scary IRS notices. You may at least get a free membership. I have one nonprofit I initially volunteered for; I'm now handling all their bookkeeping, payroll and tax filings for a flat rate per month.

I also worked part time for a bookkeeping franchise for a few months at a higher rate than minimum wage — exposed me to a lot of different business structures. However, I had to quit that due partly to time constraints but mosly because I couldn't control my “assigned” clients — folks who were obviously running everything and the kitchen sink through their business accounts as business expenses and others who were not withholding payroll taxes, for example.
