To work for a public accounting firm but also do bookkeeping on the side under your own private practice?

I also wanted to point out that the bookkeeoing clients are not connected to the cpa firm i work for. So no independence issues there

If you are 100% absolutely positive the clients you want to do bookkeeping for have ZERO connections or affiliations, either directly or indirectly, to the CPA firm you do public accounting for or their clients then I believe it would be ok. I think the problem becomes that it's almost impossible to be 100% sure and through no fault of your own, you may inadvertently cause an independence issue.

    Just my 2 cents…

I work for a big 4 as an auditor and they make you sign a contract stating you will only work for them during your employment.

Did you sign a non-compete contract when you started at your public accounting firm? I think if your firm offers tax services, and you do as well, that could be a conflict of interest.

I think the important factor is the difference between illegal and frowned upon by an employer firm.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Did not sign a non-compete contract. I dont think I will end up doing it, but its cool reading everyones opinion on the matter. I appreciate it 🙂
