Has anyone ever worked at a hospital?

    An opportunity has come for me to take a job as an accountant at a hospital. Has anyone ever worked in a hospital? what is it like compared to the conventional business/corporation accounting job.

    I have worked at a not-for-profit health care system for the past 23 years. I have many affiliates that I am responsible for such as an ambulance service, a healthcare foundation, senior living community, nursing homes, and two HUD regulated facilites. I also maintain all of the fixed assets for all of the previous mentioned companies, as well as other affiliates in the system. I also prepare 990's for all of these affilates. ( I pray that a 990 or related questions are on my REG exam in Nov!!) I have only worked at a small CPA firm while I was in college but have extensive work with external auditors for years. SInce my affiliates are so diverse, I feel like it has given me alot of experience with multiple companies.

    Are you changing jobs or is this a first time job? What would your position be at this hospital?

    Thanks for the response! It would be my first job. It seems that the position is a kind of jack of all trades, but they specifically say that i would be responsible for compliance with sox section 404. I'm not sure how i feel about being an accountant at a hospital, i fear i may be missing out on other experiences. Does running a non profit like a hospital have similiar characteristics as in a business like setting?

    Not-for-profit and for-proft hospitals (which sounds like the one you would be working for) are VERY different. I knew nothing about SOX until I started studying for this crazy exam. Maybe this position would be a good way to get some all around experience. Good luck.
