What do you mean by govt compliance? I do school audits, most are OMB A-133 Single Audits which means they have to comply with the OMB rules.

My firm does a lot of Governmental Audits- Counties, Cities, School Districts, etc. I agree with @dhuffman, if you want to know Government Compliance requirements related to Single Audits, the OMB Circular A-133 Compliance Supplement is a good place to start. Will that help or do you have a specific question related to the compliance?

well my firm is dealing with hurrican relief and maknig sure what people are claiming for assistance is accurate and tell the state what to pay and not to pay. I just wanted to see how it relates to audits even though Ive never been in either and this is my first firm.

If it's federal assistance there are regs that tell what is allowed and not allowed for costs. If it's state's then you probably need a copy or whatever grant documentation is available to try and sort out what is an allowable cost. It's like dealing with the IRS but worse as each state has it's own rules.

If this is your first time doing it, yes, unfortunately. I'm assuming you are in one of the coastal states. I know from my prelaw days and having lived there for 3 years, if you are in Louisiana it will be an adventure. First the state, only one, follows Napoleanic law which is not the same as the rest of the states.

One document that may or may not help is the A-87 guide. It's a federal guide to allowable costs. You might be able to use that as a starting point. To be honest without seeing what you area facing it's kind of hard to determine what exactly might help. If you are doing an audit of a state or local government the AICPA's guide is helpful. If it's individuals then the IRS rules might be the best to start with.
