Finished! Now depressed?

So once the high of actually passing the exam passed, I came to the realization that I’m depressed! Generally I’m a happy-go-lucky person, but since I passed the last exam (got my score last window), I’ve been seriously down. I don’t know if it’s because of the change from a super structured study / work schedule to just work, or the fact that after beginning classes in 2008 I’ve finally achieved my goal or what! Any one else experience anything similiar or have any suggestions on how to get out of this crazy funk? My husband experienced the same thing after he took the bar.

    Much appreciated!

@rowing – Are you from the OC? If you enjoy the structure and grind of the exam, you could consider a specialization. You could specialize in forensics, valuation, IT, etc. I believe the AICPA has a few other designations. This will keep you busy until you can figure out exactly what you want to do. If you are looking for thrills, you could just go skydiving!

I wish I had your problem. This reminds me of multi-millionaire's who complain they are not happy.

In all seriousness, you worked hard so reward yourself! Go on a LONG vacation and forget about accounting. If your still unhappy when you get back and want to continue to be challenged you could always go get a JD or something.

Haven't experienced it b/c I went from work and study for CPA to work and grad school (started grad school night before (hopefully!) last CPA exam so no break), but I imagine that would feel pretty down too (I was actually just thinking about that and what it would be like if I didn't have grad school).

You should probably find something else to fill your time now. You're used to filling it constructively and now that goal is passed, you need to set another goal for yourself that requires time and effort. Like Minimorty said, maybe you should specialize, go back to school…or just get involved in something.

Some people love the no-studying life, and adapt right into it. Some people feel like it's a let-down. When a person feels like that, the spare time allows her/him to have time to feel like that. If s/he get busy with something, then there's no time to dwell on feeling down, and the busyness fills the person with a sense of purpose.

I also agree with dtomasello – sometimes a vacation is all that's needed….

Minimorty – Yes, I'm in orange county. I've done the skydiving thing, I think once is enough =) I'm actually a forensic accountant already, but I guess I could just keep specializing.

dtomasello – the long vacation is still on the to-do list… maybe that would help!

    Thanks!

I have always been interested in forensic accounting. What all do you do? Do you work for a company or on your own for hire? I have a BA in Psychology and Accounting so I'm intrigued by that career path. If you get a minute, tell me more about what you do, what you think of it, and whether or not you think there is a shortage of forensic accountants.

@rowing – Awesome. I played tennis for UCI and still live in the area. I cant believe you went skydiving. You ARE a thrill-seeker. The AICPA awards the CFF designation for forensics. That might be something to look into. Good luck!

It happened to me for about a month after my last exam. Now I don't even want to touch a CPA review! I'm also on my last MBA semester and started working in a local firm. I will probably go for the new AICPA-CIMA certificate (CMA counterpart) called CGMA. Chartered Global Management Accountant.

hilaryh_88 – I do forensic accounting for family law litigation. It's really interesting and I absolutely enjoy my work. Hours are very reasonable (rarely over 40/week) and pay is good. I work for a small company and we do business valuations, community/separate property disputes, and a whole range of other things. I took a forensic accounting class, but it's not really comparable to what I do at all. Also – all the info you learned for the CPA exam doesn't really apply either =)

Hah I have a similar situation..like this past year has been a rollercoaster of emotions…every few months I get exciting awesome great news! Pass this, pass that, license this, new job that…now it seems like I have nothing dramatic going on since Aug 1 and the natural high is wearing off. I often think of the past year as the greatest 12 months of my life.

I planned to do so many things after cpa, not doing some of them adds to the ‘depression'…I also missed studying and it felt wierd to get back to the state of just chillin' …

I guess this state of mind is common once you pass. hehehehe Who would thought we would miss the torture?? I feel the excitement of passing each part, waiting for scores and waiting for the license far out-weights the torture and sacrifice we go through.

My co-worker who passed her fourth part about a year ago, said she also felt a little down when the exams were over, but once she got used to it it was great.

It's a change from what you're used to, and it's very normal.

    Enjoy your free time!
