With so many passing scores, i really now doubt whether CPA is really a tough exam. I have a feeling that anyone who does CPA can pass the exam but it is only the time taken to complete may differ. With hard work, dedication and luck anyone can pass CPA……..and this is one exam where people who are confident fail and people who say they have bombed it pass. I am not really able to understand this. My personal experience with AUD has been very bad. I was thinking i will pass both the times, i ended up getting 74…dont understand really. What’s your view?….

    BEC: 77(Nov 2010), 81(Jul 2012).
    FAR: 80(Jul 2012).
    REG: 72(Jul 2012), 78(Oct 2012).
    AUD: 71(Nov 2010),74(Jul 2012),74(Oct 2012),75(Jan 2013)- Thanks God, without you i couldnt have done this. I'M DONE !!!

It's not the most challenging material. It tests your commitment and ability to see thing through. When partners came into class to talk to us this was a thing I remember them saying. Of course if you are a straight A naturally smart person it will require less time but the main thing is that it will require time, a lot of time, time you could be doing other things that you enjoy, but if you can forego those other things for what is really a small period of time in your career, you will reap the benefits forever.

I think you have to consider your population, too… when you say “so many passing scores,” I'm assuming you mean the people that post here. Which means A) They are dedicated enough students to even be on this forum at all, and B) They decided to post their score. How many people that fail actually post on the boards telling all of us? If it were me I would be just as likely to go sulk and keep studying for the next one.

^^ THOSE are the actual pass rates of the CPA exam. Don't kick yourself because you failed and feel like the minority on the boards. You CAN do it if you are dedicated (I believe in you!!), but don't fool yourself into believing that it's easy and you are dumb for having gotten a 74. It happens to the best of us. Heck, even MCLKT failed a section, and she just scored a 97!! Obviously she's a great student – all depends on how you apply yourself =) Good luck!!

Time commitment is the primary factor in success. Most folks that get a CPA probably average 25 years old or less. To a 25 year old, a year of committment seems almost unthinkable and painful especially when you consider you will be sacrificing hanging out w/ other 25 year olds and having fun.

If you are 35 (like me) you have perspective to know that a year is really not that much time considering how much a CPA will help your career. Also, when you get married and get a little older, your priorities change and it is easier to commit to the studying. My perspecitve has changed from ‘ I want to have fun with my firends' to ‘I want to provide for my family'. It is easier to commit when you are older but there are also more demands on your time. I say that anyone who is studying for the exam and does not get called away to change a diaper really does not know what commitment is.

Do your future older self a favor and commit to passing the exam when you are young and w/o a family.

    BEC - 5/2012 - 91
    AUD - 8/2012 - 89
    REG - 1/2013 - 90

I agree with jgrfan1, I am 26, but I put off the exam right out of school, and now I am married and have a 1yr old, so as hard as I thought it would be to say no to hanging out with friends, it is 10x harder saying no to my family, especially when the cutest little girl in the world is coming down the hall towards my office (at home) saying “Dadda dadda dadda.”

BTW, I don't say no to that, it just cuts into my study time to play for a few minutes.

    FAR - 81 (8/31/12)
    AUD - 93 (10/19/12)
    BEC - 79 (11/27/12)
    REG - 92 (2/8/13) DONE! All 1st attempt!

    OMG, Rukus, *tears*

It's so true you and jgrfan nailed it. The commitment is there, but there is a much greater demand on your time.

@lyzgrace – very good idea to point out the pass rates.

Heck, I failed 3 times! (actually 4, I took FAR in the summer without so much as opening my book because NTS was expiring and scored a 41. I just don't tell about that, because really, it can't even count as trying.) My second attempt was a 74 and that was with 300+ hours of study. I am not exaggerating.

Studying for this exam and the pressure to pass is by far the most difficult and challenging thing I have ever done. And I have faced some obstacles in my life.
