AnonymousInactive@akb – I agree 100% – I live in LA and have been through a few hurricanes/tropical storms and would never come on here and complain that people weren't thinking about “ME” when they have their own life problems to deal with. This is a CPA site so naturally the forums are about the exams. My heart goes out to those affected as I know how they feel, but life goes on for those not affected.
@Maverick – ha, your comment doesn't bug me at. I also belong to a running site and the same frustrations were being talked about there (in regards to the NYC Marathon). There were MANY disagreements about how the situation was being handled, a few people upset because people were talking about the “runners' inconvenience versus the locals' plight. All in all…people prepare to take tests and run marathons and when things don't work out, disapppointment is assured. People need a place to vent without others getting all judgeypants on them.

MaverickMembernimmle02, thanks a lot for reminding me that my husband sent me Belgium chocolates. He is deployed. Anyway, I have been eating chocolate everyday for almost a week now. I told myself to stay away from them…but after your post reminded me I have chocolate, now I am tempted to eat it and I lost 10lbs. since he left.
ak9874, I also have had many experience with devastating weather. I grew up on a small island (Guam) that is in the path of typhoons, which occurred almost every year and at times more than twice a year during typhoon season. (Yes, we actually have typhoon seasons). Anyway, growing up, we lost our home twice, had no power and water for weeks. However, because I grew up poor – and in a way not many people would understand or agree with – growing up poor had a blessing of its own: We adapted well and the conditions we endured following a typhoon never really brought our spirits down. We never had much to begin with so the loss of power, water, little food did not affect us a great deal.
But for people who grew up financially fortunate I can't imagine how difficult it is to deal with losing their homes and having to live through the conditions Sandy's victims are going through. I just have to pray for them and to thank the Lord that situations like these help bring people together and pray that it draws affected people closer to God.

AnonymousInactiveI totally agree with the growing up poor thing. My parents got married at 18 because my mom got preggers so they had no college degree, no parents to help them out and no work experience. We were in the poverty level most of my life and my parents refused to go on welfare or foodstamps even though they could have. They always taught me that you choose your life and should not expect others to take care of you. Obviously there are different circumstances for everyone. I am by no means judging anyone who has been on or are on government assistance. I was on unemployment for a couple of months so there is not judgypants here. However, them raising us in a poor environment made me a stronger person.

MaverickMemberakb9874, we have more things in common. 🙂 My parents were very young when they started having children. My mom was in high school. Also, no college degree. But I love her dearly. Of course, it wasn't her fault she married in high school. She was forced by my grandmother to marry my father because he had kissed my mom in front of her mother. (Yeah, I know…but way back in the day…very strict Filipino upbringing.) Well, my mom ended up with 8 kids. (She is an only child…how that happened? Figured she wanted to get back at my grandmother.)
You and me? After growing up poor? CPAs…we're in the money, we're in the money….at least a bit more than when we were younger…hehe!
