I lurk here quite a bit, and have been on radio silence. So this is a bit of a brain dump.
Preparation experience: I did modified Becker. I had to stop and start because of some unpleasantness. Due to that, I had to restart my study process. I took a leisurely pace, about one section a week. The modification was the I in NINJA (Intensive notes), as I am an auditor and it has been some time since I had to really contemplate the sixteen different ways to account for a non-monetary exchange. Add in the fact that I am in an audit specialty with simple financials, which made the forgotten concept of OCI new to me.
That all went very well, up until, oh about halfway, where I realized I would not make my timetable, where my leisurely pace upgraded to screw it, just plow through it. Hell with the notes.
Review: 40% denial, 30% self loathing, 10% resentment and blame (equal parts), 20% actual review.
Test experience: If I might humble brag, the test seemed very easy, and very reasonable with only 2-3 major curve-balls and 6 flagged questions, but on those I made my best effort to go to first principles, mnemonics or make the best guess of it. I guess it worked.
My goal through this whole process is to maintain a “strident apathy”. Don't get too anxious, don't freak out, just check the boxes and put in the time.
Upon reflection, unfortunately this quote sums up the whole CPA process thus far:
“But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.”
