Lisa, I think we've all wondered why it takes so long to release computer-graded test scores. All the “weights” for each question seem to have been determined previously as each “operational” question was tested and evaluated previously as a “pre-test” question. Even the written communication in BEC is mostly computer graded.
This is the only official AICPA reasoning I could find as to why scores are not released sooner. It's not even close to helpful at explaining why it takes a month or so, but apparently scores are released a lot faster now than they used to be.

“Scores — even preliminary ones — cannot be released without state board review and the application of standard quality control procedures. For these reasons, issuing scores at test centers is impractical and the possibility is not being considered…. Faster and more frequent score release will be introduced after the implementation of CBT-e — a program of major CPA exam improvements. However, “real-time” score reporting is not a realistic option and is not being considered.”
