    To California people…

I'm assuming they were only able to release those AUD and BEC scores they received before NASBA crashed last night. Everyone else has to wait…

    AUD - Apr '12 - 76
    FAR - Aug '12 - 79
    BEC - Nov '12 - 74, Jan '13 - 82!!
    REG - Feb 28, 2013 - 74, Apr 18th - 74, July 6th - 76!!
    Really?? 3 74's?

    CPA - October 2013

If NASBA handles all of the grading of the exam and is able to release scores to the majority of CPA candidates directly, why do “Non-NASBA states” exist? Why must the exam be scored by NASBA then released to the state then released to the candidate, when NASBA is capable of releasing the score to the candidate by itself?

Sorry… I just dont trust the Maryland State Board…

@GoingHammm, It's pretty customary for individual states to handle licensing. i.e. your driver's license, firearms license, etc etc etc are all run by your state. NASBA was formed because the exam is the same for everyone but the states maintain the right to “opt-out” of NASBA if they want to.

No need to be sorry for your comment GoingHammm, if your nerves are as frayed as mine are waiting for a state board to post scores, I totally understand your reasoning.

I think the answer to your question is actually another two questions: Why do some states choose not to utilize NASBA? And why does it take longer for NASBA to release scores to non-NASBA states?

I have no idea what the answer is to the 2nd question. Regarding the 1st question, in my mind, the CPA process needs more uniformity across the board. We are all taking the same test, earning the same credentials, and going to the same testing company. Therefore, we should have one application process, one set of standards, and one place to check our scores. It's segmented because the CPA is a state-issued credential, but I think the AICPA and NASBA should have a goal to reduce disparities in the process.

With that being said… Do non-nasba states handle the grading of their exams? …Or is ALL grading done by nasba? Thanks for your responses.

@badger, it doesn't take longer for NASBA to release scores to non-NASBA states. It's just an extra step. NASBA sends NASBA people their scores at the same time they send non-NASBA states the scores. Then the non-NASBA states have to take that information and publish it.

The AICPA does all of the grading- NASBA and the state boards just do distribution when score release comes. The AICPA doesn't have your name- just an ID number. NASBA and the state boards match the number (and the score associated with that number) with your name, and then send you your score.

@wizards8507, your comment does make perfect sense to me, but in that case somebody (either the IL state board or NASBA) isn't telling the whole truth. The IL board claims they have not actually received any FAR and REG scores yet. If NASBA actually sent the information over at the same time, IL should have all scores in, and they are just saying they don't have all scores to get people off their back. But, if they are telling the truth, then NASBA in fact does take longer to release to some states than others. They've either got the scores and for some reason they take awhile to get things posted, or they don't actually have them yet. Or, they just like messing with strung-out CPA Candidates.

Definitely not saying you are incorrect- just tired of speculation and waiting.

@goinghamm I agree and I've had many issues with the Maryland state board.

Ok.. I knew the AICPA administered the exam but I was confused about the grading process. Thanks Badger–your help is greatly appreciated!

Either way… to me it seems pointless to have “NASBA states” and “Non-NASBA states.” Everything should be uniform. Adding an extra step when it really isnt necessary just seems very inefficient. Thanks again for your responses!
