Thinking about taking the CFE exam but I don’t really know much about it. How many hours does it take to study for? I heard study materials are around $500 or so. Also, right now I’m working at a medium sized public accounting firm. After I get the designation, what other opportunities will be available for me?

Check out the ACFE website. They have a job postings and a few areas where members share their experiences. Its pretty cool. I think you may have to be a member to see some of it though.

I'm taking it once I pass the CPA. If you are going into any field that involves fraud, the CFE is a must have. The FBI posts forensic accounting positions every once and a while. But I'm still waiting for an opening in Houston. Don't want to move. But according to the ACFE website, their self-study material is over $800 and the test will cost $200. So not that bad. It's a take home test, which I love.
