I was trying to apply for the CPA License from Cali. My problem is that I have been working under a supervision of a CPA for almost 2 years now and want to go via pathway2. However, I do not believe that my supervisor has an active license. I was reading the statement below from state board of accountancy (Cali) and it just mentions valid CPA not valid active CPA. Please refer to the highlighted section below. Can someone explain??? Thanks

It other cases it mentioned valid active license but if it is from other state does it has to be active?? Am I reading too much into it….I am from MASS and I do not have 150 credit hours that is why I am looking into other options.

If experience is obtained outside California, written verification from the out-of-state board or licensing body that the supervisor holds a valid license to practice public accountancy is required. Upon receipt of an application for licensure, the Board will send the applicant a verification form that must be mailed to the out-of-state board or licensing agency issuing the supervisor’s CPA license. An official seal of the state board or foreign licensing body issuing the license to the supervisor is required on the signed document. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide the necessary fees associated with the completion of the verification.

In CA, the experience must be obtained under the supervision of an active CPA. That means a CPA with a valid license. A CPA license is not valid unless the person has met the requirements of renewal (CPE, renewal fees, etc.) Im not even sure you can call yourself a CPA anymore if you dont have an active license. I think you have to put a disclaimer every time you use the CPA designation.

Consider active and valid to mean the same thing. I dont know of any state that will accept experience performed under the supervision of an inactive CPA.

    @CalCPASoon

    Thanks

    That does make sense.

I have 120 credit hours and 2 years general experience

Is there any state where I can apply for the license from..

I really do not want to go for 150 credit hours soon…

    I just need some break…

    Thanks

Are you sure about the 2 years general experience? I dont think it will count if it was not performed under the supervision of an active CPA. At least, i know for sure in CA the general experience must still be under the supervision of an active CPA.

I wish it had even occured to me to go for my CPA in another state. I am in MA.

That aside, if you want something badly enough you will make it happen even if you have to go to school while you are taking the CPA. It is possible to work, go to school, raise kids and do this at the same time.

    Cant wait to be done!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I agree with mIa. My major was Econ and I had ZERO accounting courses in college. I had to take a bunch of night and online accounting courses to get my 24 units to sit for the exam in California. If you want it, you'll get it done.
