Becoming a CPA….more than passing the exam?

I am going to law school next fall, but I will have my Master’s in Accountancy in May. I was thinking about beginning to study for the CPA exam and trying to pass all 4 sections before law school. I was under the impression that once you passed the exam, you became a CPA (assuming you met the hour requirements to sit). However, I have seen information saying that there is more to it. I’ve seen stuff that says you have to 40 hours of work each year for some organization/group? and you will be licensed after a couple of years of practice. Is this true? In that case, would getting a CPA make any sense for a person like me since I’ll be in school full time for the next three years?

    Any input would be great!

I will be sitting in Missouri if that means anything.

    Thanks!

In Louisiana you need one year (2,000 hours) of “supervision” by a CPA to get a CPA license. Usually that means working for a CPA for 40 hours a week. The proof is to have your name on the CPA's timesheets, especially if you are working on your own accounts.

I have pased all of the exams. However, I do not have a CPA license. I am also not working for a CPA. Therefore, I have chosen to open my own accounting practice. If anyone knows of a CPA who is willing to work with me on getting a license, please let me know.

    THANKS!

@croggs, work experience and education requirements vary by state. Here's a link with more info on Missouri's requirements for licensure. Also, it's best that you call your state board of accountancy to verify the information.

    REG 68,67,83(7/2010); FAR 43,71,80(8/2010); AUD 85(11/2010); BEC 74,79(2/2011)
    NYS CPA 5/2011

There is one state (I don't remember which) which requires ZERO work experience if you have a master's degree in accounting. I'll try find out…

Thanks all for your help! I need 2000 hrs, but at least passing the exam doesn't expire. Now, I need to decide if I want to take the exam. Anyone think passing all 4 exams between now and mid August is doable putting in 15 hours a week?
