Sorry I need to get this off my chest and this is the only place that understands what I mean. At my bank we have a banker that claims she passed the CPA exam despite

    *only having an associates degree

*claiming she took 2 months to study for it (this was different from the 6 months she told me she was studying for it when she told me before)

*Not knowing there were 4 parts

I really want to say something, like if you passed the exam why are you a banker or just call her out on her lies….

Some people live in a fairytale world where they can pretend to be any successful person they never will be in real life. I worked with someone once who had a similar behavior pattern to your coworker.

Pretty sure what she's describing is impossible…you should try and chat with her about details of the CPA exam structure and sitting requirements and see what her explanation is. It would certainly be entertaining.

I don't know what state she's “licensed” in, but many have online verifications (I believe NY and NJ do). If so, invite her to show off her name online.

    Couldn't pass again!

I think Delaware is the only state that would allow an associates degree and DE does have an online CPA license verification site.

I agree, ask her to show you where she is listed and just tell her it is because you are so excited to see your name there too (eventually). Or maybe tell her you need to list people with whom you have worked that are licensed CPA's and you just wanted to make sure she was ok with that.

I mean really…lying about having this credential is no small matter…I kinda hope you are mistaken or she is confused rather than her just being dishonest…is there a chance that she got it a long time ago when the requirements and structure were different?

Who cares if she is lying?? Coworkers lie all the time. Don't you have better things to worry about (like passing AUD)?

Just ignore her. She wants attention so don't give it to her. Someone who lies about the CPA is sad and pathetic. Maybe she's just a pathological liar.

Whenever you have to see her, barage her with questions that might appear on the CPA exam. LOL. I assure you she will tire of it before you.

does she just do this at work or does she do it in real life, in the public? if she runs around town calling herself a CPA, you have the ability to call up your state's Board of Accountancy to file a complaint. it is pretty much fraud — similar to a person calling themselves a medical doctor or a lawyer when they haven't gotten a license or passed the bar.

i know for my state (Virginia – https://www.boa.virginia.gov/Consumers/Complaints.shtml ), you can file a complaint and they will investigate it. depending on the severity, they would warn them to stop doing it, fine them for using the CPA title without being licensed, or seek criminal persecution of its a serious case.

if she's only doing it at work to annoy you, question her about taxes or derivatives. that should shut her up.

    BEC - 85 (Took May 2011)
    FAR - 94 (Took Jul 28 2011)
    REG - 87 (Took Aug 17 2011)
    AUD - 98 (Took Aug 31 2011)
