2018 Score Holds

    Sorry for the long post but I have to get this off my chest! I have passed 3 parts of this thing. I passed BEC 1/11/2017 and I passed AUD on 3/4/2017. I passed REG in the second quarter of last year (you know, the one with the insanely long waiting period for our scores.)

    I am having trouble with FAR, I think most of it is bc I am so burnt out it is hard to retain anything anymore. I am scheduled to take it on Feb 10th. First attempt was 66, second attempt was 72 (but I was so sick coughing my head off during the exam).

    I wanted to get on here to gripe about the score releases for this year because you guys are the only ones that understand. I am obviously hoping it wont matter bc I am going to pass on 2/10, but if I don’t, and have to keep taking it, I probably get screwed out of my last testing window which means I would lose BEC and AUD since I passed them both in the same quarter. I wont get my second quarter score release until 6/29 because of the newest hold and I will have to get an NTS as well as schedule it by 7/10… They typically don’t move fast enough for that to happen… If they had a normal release I would be able to take it early 2nd Qtr and if I failed, I would have time to get another NTS and schedule it between 7/1 and 7/10.

    My plan is to pass this time, but if I don’t, I will take it as late as I can in 2nd Qtr so I can get as much study time in, then take it, then keep studying in case I can actually sit in time for my last shot. I don’t think I can mentally handle going back to being only 25% done…

    The test is already bad enough, but when they keep messing with the score release dates, it feels impossible. I have had the 10 week score release push back of 2nd quarter 2017, the long release date of 3rd Qtr 2017, they canceled my release date of this quarter (2/23 and pushed it to 3/8), now only 1 release date per quarter for the rest of the year. It is beyond ridiculous.

    We are in the same boat, so I completely understand where you are coming from. Best of luck!

    Reach out to your state board of accountancy. They have the authority to grant extensions on exam credit. Let them know what is happening and what your plan was to finish the CPA Exam and give them an exact time on how you plan to take your exam sections. Similar to what you wrote above, but let them know how much additional time you would need. Don't say anything crazy like to the end of the year, just enough time to get your third test in during the 3rd quarter. Since it is highly unlikely that you would be able to receive a score, get reregistered, and scheduled by the 10th.

    I have tried reaching out to the NJ state board of accountancy, as my one section is set to expire on 6/30/18. They said they couldn't grant me an extension, so I guess it really depends on your state and how nice they want to be.

    @Ashley it is worth a try to reach out to your state board.

    I haven't reached out yet, BUT I am pretty sure NC didn't grant anyone extensions for the 2nd quarter 2017. I assume if they didn't do it for that HUGE period of waiting, I doubt they will for this. But there is always a chance and all they can say is, No.

    Can anyone from NC clarify about the extensions from last year?

    @ashley keep your head up! I'm in the same boat as you. I failed REG after the extraordinary long wait this summer with a 73. Then only improved by 1 pt on 11/20 retake. So now I'm down to my last attempt before I lose AUD 2/5 and BEC on the revised score release date 3/8.

    I certainly sympathize. All the shenanigans around the score release are way beyond. Honestly the ppl that grade this know that they're @#$_&_#+. That's the entire point with this test. They really want to try and break your will if you are a boderline candidate. Just remember they are trying to get in your head.

    Lately I've been down to thinking about the possibility of losing 2/3 passes that it took me 2yrs and 7 failures to get bc someone has decided on a consistent basis less than half of ppl will pass. In the time I have left before my exam, I'm going to do all I can to strengthen my weak areas, and focus on how to make better guesses when Iam confused.

    Remember to stay positive, take lots of deep breaths bc you need oxygen to think, and do the best you can and don't think about anything else.

    @Wanna_B_TXCPA2014 I completely agree. This stupid test is already a mountain to climb, and then they add score release bombs in the middle. So obnoxious. I obviously don't have much experience in the test before I started taking it, but I feel like the current candidates have been through an absurd amount of “Changes” and “Push-backs” with our tests. I don't know if other years candidates have or not, or if we are just the lucky ones. I feel like we are playing the opposing team (the test) as well as the refs (the powers that be that keep moving the target!). Oh well, I just am glad that other people understand how annoyed and burnt out and tired of this I am. My family sees it, but unless you have been in it, you don't really understand the magnitude of the whole thing.

    This feels like a bonding moment so I'll share more. Took 6x for FAR 60,70,67,67,73…then 75. Reg it's been 60,66,73,74.
    For obvious reasons I'm amore than a little annoyed. Yes this forum is a great place to vent and also to plan.

    So with FAR are you struggling with JEs or govt or what? I may have something to share that could hopefully help. For me I think the difference was JEs and doing a bunch of SIMS before the exam

    I agree. Knowing JEs and doing SIMs in the two weeks leading up to the exam was key to passing FAR finally.

    BEC = 72 (6/08/16)
    FAR = ?
    REG = ?
    AUD = ?

    REG is a beast, this has been the one I have been struggling with as well -____-

    We will overcome this CPA hurdle!

    @lentilcounter how many SIMS did you do in the last few days of your REG prep? I've decided that I'm going to focus most of my final review effort on those topics. I'm curious to hear what you did. You seemed to have a good grasp on much of the material as I looked through the REG thread. Hoping I can hear a little something from you that may flip a switch

    I think I am just struggling to keep things in my brain at this point. It feels like there is no more room. Haha! It feels like as soon as I remember one thing, I forget another. I tell my husband that my brain is full and to stop telling me things that aren't going to be on my FAR test. 🙂

    I think a lot of my problem is just remembering which part of the information is important and in which cases you use certain figures, such as FV vs Cost or just things like that. Sometimes I do MCQ and get like a 95, and then sometimes it is a 60. I am currently watching all of my Gleim videos again, doing at least one MCQ test and one SIM set for each of their 20 “Chapters” as well as doing Ninja MCQ in between and listening to Ninja Audio in the car…

    I am just praying that I get at least a 75 on this one coming up. BUT I do plan to keep studying, maybe not as much, until I get my score, in case I need to hit it again, I will be ahead of the curve.

    We will get through this, but GEEZ I am sick of studying. I want to hang out with my husband and play with my toddler, NOT WATCH CPA VIDEOS! 🙂 Gripe Gripe Gripe, Whine Whine Whine. ha!

    @Ashley – do you mind sharing some insight on what you did to pass REG?

    Ashley, a pic says a 1000words. I did the Becker live course here in Dallas and my instructor seem to have a pic for most things. For bonds and leases she had a 6 column 4 column chart to do the Amortization. When dealing with multiple dates and interest rates a time line. Missing financial info she'd do an income statement to figure what was missing. Things like that. I had a graphic I made for myself that told me costs. But for trading sec you know it's FMV because you want the money now, held to maturity will be cost bc you aren't concerned regarding changes in value bc you are waiting till it's over.
    Making plain language translations from the jargon helps tremendously. Tons of terms but the key understanding the essence of the transaction to determine the statement it would be recorded and subsequently the acctng treatment. Hopefully this helps

    Honestly, I have NO clue how I pulled that score. I studied the exact same for all parts except I felt I wasn't getting a good handle on REG so I added Ninja Audio. For REG I did the normal Gleim of watching the videos, doing their MC tests, and their SIMS for each chapter until it thought I had “Proficient Knowledge” (which was frustrating bc sometimes you had to do like 5 MC tests in a row to get the overall score high enough to move on). Once I was finished with the chapters, I did the practice test and scored like a 68/69 I think. I had one week after that practice test to study before my test, so I did their “Custom” tests and chose every chapter and did as many MC as I could stomach. Once I figured out which chapters I was consistently doing well on, I skipped those for more troublesome chapters. Besides that, I listened to Ninja Audio on the way to and from work. I have about an 1.5 hour commute each day, so that helped. I listened until I could just about recite each chapter with Jeff. I was in the car screaming VOID and VOIDABLE until my 18 month old was laughing hysterically. 🙂

    For the parts of REG that I kept getting tripped up on, I printed out the IRS forms and wrote out on each line what went there and the limits or exceptions, etc. I would highlight lines on the IRS forms for things that just weren't sticking and kept that with me and pulled it out when I had a few minutes.

    @Wanna_B_TXCPA2014

    That does help. I am visual so doing charts and flash cards for this beast might be a really good idea. Since I keep grabbing the wrong info, I will try and make cards or notes that will have some visual reference. Maybe that will be the last thing my brain needs to hold on to this info. Typically with the others, I would try and make cards, but there seemed to be so much information I really didn't know where to start with what I needed.
