I am Korean, grown up in Seoul – familiar with what is going on in Korea.

There are so many people studying for AICPA (alternatively, US CPA) because it is easier than KICPA (CPA license issued by Korean government) If the company you try to get in is an American company, then the chances are you will have to work with people in the US. It would be beneficial to have AICPA even if you work outside of the US.

Samething with China. They have CICPA, which is harder than AICPA. So even external auditors in Big 4 in China pursue AICPA instead of CICPA as it is relatively easily attainable. At the same time, there are so many American manufacturing companies offshoring in China.

I am not 100% sure, but it should be similar in Japan. At least my company has offices in Japan as well. We sometimes work with japanese auditors. AICPA may be valuable in similar cases.

    Hope this helps.

CPA is highly recognized here but probably not much in Asia. I have few friends working for PwC in Vietnam and none of them has CPA. They did get Master abroad and I think some kind of Accounting/Auditing Certification though.
