Denial From Colorado State Board

    Hi All,

I passed my CPA exam from Colorado state in 2006. At that time I was on dependent VIsa in the US so never applied for my license. I have been working in the US for last 4/5 years and now my job needs me to get CPA License. I applied for the license in April 2015. I came to know on June 30th that Colorado state board has denied my application. The reasons for the denial are not yet communicated. This was a very frustrating experience. I would like to know if anyone on this forum are in the same boat like me. Also, I would like to discuss or seek advice about the further plan of action. I want to get my license ASAP as that is the requirement at my job.

    Thank you in advance.

    Mukta.

The education requirements for licensing have changed recently in Colorado, it is possible you don't meet them now?

    BEC - 02/21/15 - 82
    FAR - 05/29/15 - 82
    AUD - 07/09/15 - 93
    REG - 11/14/15 - 80

    All done!!!

also likely that your test scores have expired and you'll need to retake. Many states only keep the scores for 5 years.

My international education was evaluated back in 2005. As per that report I have more than 150 credit hours. I have done Bachelor of Commerce, Masters and ICWA from India. But I am not sure if that is going to satify the new requirements. The Colorado state board co-ordinator at NASBA was suggesting me to reapply with another state as the Colorado rules are very stringent now from July 1st 2015 onwards. But he suggested that wait to hear back from the state the reasons for denial of my application. Hopefully I will come to know this week.

    Thank you,

    Mukta.

@Allegra..Thankfully my test scores do not expire and I do not need to retake the test. That has been confirmed by NASBA.

My guess would be the specific accounting and business credits changed effective 7/1. Used to be 27 accounting credits, now 33 of which 6 have to be in Audit. Also used to be 21 business credits, now 27 requiredl.

Can you try NJ? I am also a candidate from India. But done my 3 years of BBA back home, and transferred my credits to an AACSB school to get my B.S. in Mgmgt w/ Accounting focus. So that helped me to obtain my 150 requirement. I think NJ scores doesn't expire too (CPA exam scores). Most of the states are going to have that 150 credits requirement.

Thank you @ mla11692 & rp12. I will try to transfer my grades to another state. I am in NJ. But I wish NASBA does not ask me to repeat the whole process of educational evaluation etc all over again. It will be a time consuming as well as an expensive affair.

Yes, you will likely have to repeat the evaluation process, you are after all starting fresh with a new state.

Laughing at the notion you are concerned about the time and expense. It is humorous. You waited 9 years and now are in a rush, and regarding the expense you've saved significant license renewal and CPE fees since you were never licensed.

@Mukta. Unfortunately you will be asked to evaluate. Since it is a new juridiction, and rules are different. Also, note that evaluation companies differ from state to state. Also NASBA has come up with their own Int'l credits evaluation.

Thank you@ rp12. Now I will wait to hear back from Colorado State Board first and then decide my plan of action.

    Hi All,

I finally received the letter from Colorado state board confirming the denial of my CPA License Application for the want of 3 semester credit hours focussing on US GAAS .

I applied for the license on April 3rd. They gave me decision on July 13. Now I can't even finish the relevant audit course and reapply as the rules of colorado state board have changed. Is anyone in the same boat? I am constantly trying to get in touch with the Colorado State board co-ordinator at NASBA but no success.

I feel this process is very subjective and not objective. If any one of you have dealt with this situation please help me.

I want to get my license by Nov 2015. Please advise.

    Thank you very much,

    Mukta.

Why don't you just take the class? There's local colleges, and online class options too. You can finish it in 3 months or less, it's 1 quarter.

That all sounds like a pain. But at this point there is nothing that you can do but take that one missing class. Just make sure that it is one that Colorado will accept. People have talked about applying through another state, which I guess is still possible, but that process will take a few months as well. Also applying through another state opens up another can worms because you don't have your state's license, so you'll have to go through even more paper work and follow another set of rules. You're better off just taking that one class.

    Hi All,

Thank you for your suggestions! Now I figured out that even if I take the audit course it is not good as Colorado State board might not consider my education from India to be valid. (which was considered valid when I appeared for the CPA exam in 2006). This is taking me no where. I am really frustrated.

I don't think its so much that the process is subjective, but all of the state boards do expect candlidates to read all the fine print before applying. Before the rules changed, as I understand it, CO stated the requirements included 3 credits in audit. Its an easy oversight for a candidate to make but I would be very surprised if talking to the board changed anything. I know this will not please you but be prepared for their answer to be that you did not meet the requirements prior to July 1 and therefore must meet the new requirements. Unfortunately CO is not exempting people who met the requirements at any time prior to 7/1/15,

Do you have 150 credits? I am assuming that is why the July 1 change affects you so greatly, and you're likely going to need to get to 150 to apply anywhere at this point. The US Virgin Islands is now the only US territory that does not require 150 credits.

I know it stinks to need to get the additional credits but its not the end of the world.
