Hi guys,

I’m having some issues getting my work experience signed off at my company and wanted to get your opinion and some advice.

Background:- I work at one of the BIG 4 firms, in a foreign country, we are a small private firm. I work in the Audit department and have been working for almost 2 years.

NASBA Requirements: I’m registered in Colorado which requires that I get 1 Year experience in Public Accounting (Audit covers that.) The certificate has the following requirement of the verifier of my work experience:

“Attest to having direct knowledge of work performed, as required by Colorado Rule 4.1.B, by the applicant during the entire dates of employment stated above. I performed periodic review and evaluation of the applicant’s work, while holding an active status CPA license to practice public accountancy during the entire period of employment being verified”

Problem: There are not many CPA’s at my firm, a CPA or CA from an IQAB company can sign off on my experience. (However since most of the people in my company do not do CPA they are not as familiar with the requirements.) We have a Partner (he is the Partner of another department) who is a IQAB CA and who i wanted to sign off my experience and I checked with NASBA that the person who verifies my experience does not have to be in the same department as long as he can attest to the statement above. However the firm is saying that as per the requirement above, since he does not work in Audit he can not attest to that.

So I bring up the next option a Senior Staff Accountant who works in Audit and who I have worked with on jobs before and therefore he HAS reviewed my work should be able to sign off my experience right? I checked with NASBA and they said there is no requirement that they be a manager/partner so this guy meets all of their requirements and he has agreed to sign off. However my firm is saying he can’t sign off my experience at his level.

What should I do?

It's not really up to your firm, or NASBA for that matter. I would contact Colorado's board of accountancy directly. If they say it's okay, have them send you an e-mail confirming their position. Present that e-mail to your firm's leadership and hopefully that will be enough for them.

Well… this isn't any help but I'm in the same situation hopefully it can be solved here….
