If you live in California, you don’t have to work at a public accounting firm to get your 12 months of experience or even your audit hours, according to the California Board of Accountancy. As long as you work under a CPA for 12 months under Pathway 2 — in private or public accounting — you have completed your basic experience required for licensure. I think that is not a surprise to most people. But what may not be as well known is that you can get your audit hours by doing INTERNAL audit, as long as it is done under the leadership of a CPA who is allowed to sign off on financial statements. Now, if you work in internal audit rather than external audit, it may take you longer to accrue the audit hours, it is a great way for those working in private accounting to increase their value as CPAs.
