    Hi all, I have plenty of time to worry about this, but I wanted to get an idea of what I will have to deal with when it comes time to applying for my license once I pass all 4 parts of the exam.

    I have 3 years of public audit experience (2002-2005) and have been working in private industry doing financial reporting since I left public in 2005 (under managament of licensed CPAs, although not practicing public accounting). I would like to avoid having to contact my old employer from 8 years ago (Big 4 Accounting firm) to try to get them to verify my work experience. I have a feeling it will be extremely difficult task to undertake as I no longer have any direct contact with the firm or anyone there for the past 8 years.

    I did some research and “THINK” I may be ok having my current employer of 8 years verify my work experience from what I read, but I did come across conflicting information discussing a breakdown of type of work experience that I could not tell if it was current or outdated.

    Has anyone (especially in the state of NY) received their license only using their private industry work history as your qualifying work experience?

    You should be totally fine, but I would go to the NY accounting board to make sure. Describe exactly what you do and they should be able to tell you right on the phone. I don't have any public experience; I work at a bank and fulfilled the Utah experience requirement by underwriting working capital facilities, which involves analyzing the financials of potential borrowers among other things. That worked without issue, so you should be golden. Every state will probably be a little different, so I would still call the board just for the peace of mind.

    FAR - 76 (1/12)
    AUD - 76 (5/12)
    BEC - 82 (11/12)
    REG - 59, 73, 73, 78! (4/12, 8/12, 10/12, 2/13)

    Wiley test bank on everything, Roger USB+book on REG after first attempt.

    You don't need to work for an accounting firm to become a CPA. At least in Indiana, your experience working for a CPA (even in industry) is fine.

    I intend to use my experience in industry and was assured it would count. I do have 20 years of experience as a financial accountant, however intend to use my most current three years of experience as a Senior Accountant working for an active CPA for the experience portion.

    This is off the application:

    Sec. 8.3. (a) An applicant's experience in a particular position meets the

    requirements in IC 25-2.1-3-10 if the work is verified by the holder of an

    active certificate issued by the board or issued by another state so long as

    the certificate allows the holder to perform similar acts to those allowed to be

    performed by certificate holders in Indiana who:

    (1) employed the applicant or a legal entity controlled by that individual

    employed the applicant;

    (2) worked for the same employer as the applicant;

    (3) reviewed the accounting work of the applicant on a periodic basis in

    the capacity of an outside accounting firm, a government agency, or some

    similar capacity; or

    (4) otherwise has direct knowledge of the work performed by the

    applicant.

    Every state is different. However I am positive you can have your current employer sign off. I'm in NY too and personally know people who have done it this way, and know the bosses who have signed off. Good luck!

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

    This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

    In Lousiana I'm getting my experience without ever working directly for a CPA. I have to have 4 years experience instead of one but since the books I work on are audited, it counts at 1/4 the rate of working directly for a CPA. I may be able to speed it up due to quarterly write ups by a CPA and a board treasurer who is a CPA.

    I worked for 3 years at a public accounting firm; however, I left to serve in the military prior to receiving my CPA. Now that I am back, and focused on my CPA, I need some help in getting my attest hours verified. I have the hours; however, I am no longer in contact with anyone at the firm. Since the forms have to be completed and signed by a CPA that you worked under can I simply send them to HR and presume that they will route them to the correct person(s)? Has anyone else found themselves in a similar situation. Thanks in advance for any advice.
