    I’m wondering if my experience will count for licensing…does anyone else have a similar background? I worked part-time for almost 6 years at a small public accounting firm in Wisconsin. Some of the work consisted of: year end closing, compilations, simple & more complex individual tax returns, some partnership and corporate returns, payroll tax reports, W-2’s, 1099’s…..I’m wondering because my experience is part-time, which is looked on less favorably, and also because some of the work is probably considered bookkeeping and some actual accounting.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey Celeste, can you give us a range of an hourly pay for part time position at the firm?

    I JUST got a phone call for a part time position. I will be hired to do some audit work for the firm and tax preparation. I will start in Jan. Hopefully I will hear by the end of this year that I have passed all of the CPA exam. In addition, I have an MBA degree. Currently, I am a staff accountant at a corporation and have the ability to work 4-10 hour days (M,T,TH,F). Therefore I would have my only day off during the week, evenings and Saturdays to work part time at the firm.

    The firm said they would like to start me at $18/hour. I was in shock.. really? They don't even have to offer me benefits. I set up a date to come in starting in January, but didn't want to be rude and conern myself with the pay at the time. I think I should have told her that was too low and I should have asked if she was planning on 1099ing me. 1099 would be even worse! Is $18 bad or good? She did say she wanted to see how efficient I am with my work. Which I pride myself on my multitasking abilities and work, so I would imagine it would increase.. I'm thinking starting should be $25-$30? What do you think?

    If you don't want to say on here, I understand. Thanks for any help.. I'm so confused and almost offended..? 18???? Ah!

    @WI_11-Thanks for your reply!

    @CPA Someday-I'm not sure how to answer that since I think it's a personal decision. If you feel that's too low for you then you could definitely talk to them about it. I could tell you all the details if you want since I'm an open person, but basically I wasn't as interested in money as I was with getting experience and having flexibility since my family comes first. My boss let me work at night, during the day, almost anything to accommodate me which meant more to me than $. I worked a tax season after I had quit to stay home and asked for more money that season, and at that time I was actually at $18/hr. To me that doesn't sound bad, but I'm in a much different situation. I can't put a price on being within a mile of my house, and working whenever I wanted. If I didn't have the kids, worked full-time, had my CPA… I'm sure I'd have a VERY different view of a good wage, lol! I started there at MUCH less than that too. I'm sorry if this is of no help to you whatsoever, lol! Good Luck!!!

    No it was helpful! Thank you 🙂 I know I have to start somewhere… I wonder at age 40 if I can make it to $20 an hour with a law degree. I've thought about going for my law degree next, to become a tax attorney.
