Hello guys,

I would like to ask if I can retake all my CPA exams in the state I want to transfer to if that state will not accept my CPA exam scores from my previous state?

Background:

-I passed FAR and BEC in New York (NY) under the 120 hour sit rule
-I want to transfer to Illinois (IL) but they won’t accept my NY scores because I passed them under the 120 hour rule (I confirmed with Board => Cannot transfer).
-I have a good reason to transfer from NY to IL but I will spare you the details

Therefore, would it be fine to retake all Exams under IL? Do I just let my NY scores expire if I cannot transfer them to IL?

I do not think there is an option to delete my NY scores. I just think its weird to have CPA scores for FAR and BEC in two jurisdictions. Dont know if that will cause issues.

Transfer to another state like KY or TN (just suggesting, do your research), first, then to IL..There are always loopholes 🙂

Maryland is the same way, but it does allow for a candidate to become licensed in another state first and then apply for a reciprocal license. There is no minimum length for a prior active CPA in Maryland, but some states do require you to be actively licensed and gain experience as a CPA for a certain length of time before being accepted with reciprocity. You should research Illinois' reciprocity requirements.

They won't accept your scores because you took the exam and passed w/ 120 credits, but you have the 150 now?

I'm sitting in Alaska and want to transfer to Minnesota. Is there a website that lists the states that don't accept score transfers? This has got me very worried.

Thanks for the responses but I already did quite some research and I just find it easier to start over in IL. I am also not an American so getting experience under a CPA can be difficult if I do not draw my work visa.

For IL it does not matter that you have 150 credits, if you passed your first exam before having 150 you have to start over.

However, could someone tell me if I can let my NY scores expire and start from scratch in IL? Basically, would it be an issue if I have two passing scores in NY and 4 passing scores in IL at the same time?

You're probably going to need to call NASBA. I've been on this forum for six years and don't recall anybody starting over with testing after having passed a few in another jurisdiction.

Can you finish the exams and get licensed in NY? I have some coworkers who are licensed in different states and never transferred their license.

i was living in california but was a candidate in michigan… Cali told me to take all exams in MI then transfer all scores to Cali… i have a BS, Acctg and and MST so the credits weren't an issue, but i am sure it would be the same… stay a candidate in the original state >> pass >> then worry about getting licensed.

if you want to be licensed in a state that requires more/different education then you'll have to get that taken care of before your license can be active/approved…

either way don't let time waste and finish the remaining exams!
