I’ve just recently sent in my application to the Virginia Board of Accountancy but I’m a bit worried about the 24 credit hours of general business needed to qualify to sit for the CPA exam. Would anyone happen to know if the following business courses would all be eligible?

– Legal Environment of Business (3 credits)

– Concepts & Issues in Marketing (3 credits)

– Introduction to Economics (3 credits)

– Organizational Behavior (3 credits)

– Managerial Finance (3 credits)

– Principles of Real Estate (3 credits)*

– Lower level 1-credit pass/fail computer information systems courses (4 credits)*

– Advanced Tax Accounting (3 credits) <– 3 of 6 accounting credits allowed

– Tax Research & Jurisprudence (3 credits) <– 3 of 6 accounting credits allowed

– Law for Accountants (3 credits)*

So technically I have 31 credits if these are all acceptable courses, which is definitely more than enough, but I have enough potentially problematic courses that it has me worrying while I’m waiting. I’ve starred the courses I’m concerned about. The Principles of Real Estate course dealt with brokerage and valuation and I’ve actually already asked the VBOA about it and they approved it, but if a different person goes through my transcripts for my application it might not work out as well. Law for Accountants is officially listed as ACCT 481 at my university but is also listed as a general business requirement for the CPA exam, so I’m not sure if my university considered it as part of the 6 credits of accounting courses allowed or if the VBOA just considers it a general business course. That one I do assume will be ineligible. I also know that computer information systems is listed as an eligible business course with the VBOA, but I didn’t know if it had to be a specifically business-related computer information systems course. I had 4 1-credit pass/fail courses dealing with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. And finally, I didn’t list it, but I also took Basic Practice of Statistics for 3 credits at my university. Statistics is listed as a general business course with the VBOA but my statistics course was not specifically geared towards business, so I had assumed it wouldn’t count.

If anyone has had any similar courses that they had approved as general business credits with the VBOA, could you please share your knowledge? I know I’ll find out soon enough, but I’d really like to sign up for the review course now and I don’t want to do so unless I’m at least fairly confident the VBOA will approve my application.
