Virginia Board of Accountants deemed I have insufficient accounting credits - Page 3

So I heard back from VBOA today and the licensing examiner/coordinator who reviewed my transcript deemed that I don’t have enough “upper-level” accounting credits to sit for the CPA exam. Excluding Financial and Managerial accounting, I have a total of 21 and the required amount is 24. I’m honestly a little perplexed that I graduated with an accounting degree that doesn’t align with VBOA’s requirements to sit for the CPA exam.

My question is, can this be challenged/appealed? Was anybody able to submit a justification to include certain business electives under accounting? I’ve been studying for FAR the past six weeks and was planning on taking the exam sometime late April or early May and I’d hate for this to be delayed.

    FAR - MAY 2013
    REG - AUG 2013
    AUD - OCT 2013
    BEC - NOV 2013

The LSU Gvnt/NFP book chapter takes me about 5+ hours to read but I'm taking it slow and taking notes like Jeff says to for the exam because the concepts are new to me. The homework has also taken me 4-5 hours each to do. It is possible to do the max 3 lessons a week LSU allows like Elisabeth said. It all depends on how much time you have to put in and how much you want to know the material vs just getting out of the class. The LSU fraud auditing class that I have to take for my 2nd auditing class is taking a lot less time!

On a good note, the book is cheap because it's an older version. Government and Not-for-Profit Accounting: Concepts and Practices, 5th edition and it's published by Wiley so you know it's a good textbook.

I looked into other on-line Gvnt classes and I liked the flexibility and the price of this class. Although it's not easy, I recommend it.

I was planning to sit for CPA exam in November 2015, but got an e-mail yesterday that I need 6 more semester hours in Managerial/ Cost Accounting. I already have Masters in Accounting from India and I am a CMA. Per NASBA evaluation I have 180.75 total credits including 74.25 credits in business and 51.75 credits in Accounting. I am surprised with the Board's feedback. Can anyone help me finding a good university online that offers courses specifically in Cost/ Management Accounting. I was really hopeful and did not see this coming. Please help!

I had this issue in NC, but it was 1 credit (also known as 1/4 semester hour). I tried to appeal, because my college has a weird way of converting credits into semester hours, but before it got to the hearing stage I found out it was because I could only have a maximum of 7 hours of principles of accounting, and my degree program gave me 8. I called my college – very angry – because my curriculum stated I'd have enough hours to meet these requirements and they basically told me that they knew about it and changed the program the year *after* I graduated. So it was a pity I didn't go to college for a full 5 years instead of 4.

I wound up taking a online, 1-semester course at a local community college called Accounting Information Systems, but it was basically how to use Quickbooks. I finished the course in 6 weeks and just uploaded my assignments every week when the teacher “opened” the new modules in the class. Because I already had the degree I had a difficult time finding a class I hadn't already taken, so it was this or Payroll Accounting.

I'm too scared to evaluate everything for the license yet. I'm starting a graduate program in August for a Masters in Forensic Accounting, so I'm hoping that will make up for any deficits from my bachelors degrees.
