Hi everyone, I just recently passed all four part of exams. I’m in CA and my supervisor is licensed in IL. I just found out there are two tier of licensure and he is shown as Registered CPA”. He said he can sign off my experience, but I just want to be sure before I send my application. Can he sign me off for my CA application? I’m applying for general experience (no attestation). Can Anyone familiar with IL licensure types can help me with this? Really really appreciate it!!! Thanks in advance 🙂

Try calling the California Board of Accountancy and ask if they will accept his signature. They are very helpful.

In NY they want your supervisor to be licensed in the state they are supervising you in.
If you work in NY they want a licensed NY CPA. If you work in CT then your supervisor should be licensed in CT.
Good luck. CA rules may be different.

Thank you. CA allows out of state verification but I didn’t know the IL has two types of licenses. Anyone in IL been signed off by supervisor who’s registered but not licensed ?

    Thanks!

@HamsterEat – here is the deal with Illinois. They don't *actually* have two licenses. Back in the day, it was allowed that a CPA could have the registered designation. This changed and now we have licensed CPAs, so the registered CPAs have restrictions, it looks like. No attestation services, but no CPE requirements. Here is a link to the licensing site for further clarification:

I would think you would be good since they are technically licensed, but I would definitely call CA to verify.
