Hello,

I am in a dilemma. I passed my exams and I’m in the process of applying for my license. I’ve just discovered that the state I’m registered under, Massachusetts, require either a SSN or ITIN for the license application even though I am an international candidate with no ties to the USA (was under the impression that Massachusetts did not require citizenship or residency).

Has anyone experienced this and what did you use as support for your W-7 form?

what about just using reason code box H and attaching ample explanation that you are applying for the ITIN for certification purposes?

I spoke to an IRS rep and they advised that I don't have any grounds to apply even with my situation. The only way I can try it out is to apply and relinquish my passport and see what happens.

Anyone has experience with this? What did you do?

Hello Anonymous, how did you solve the ITIN issue? I am at the same boat. I passed the CPA exam by MA state last year, and they are requiring me the ITIN for starting the licensing process. However, MA State does not require residency or citizenship and offer the exam internationally. I applied to IRS to get this ITIN, but it was rejected. I spoke to IRS agent, and I am not eligible to get the ITIN.
I do not know what to do. Would you like to share how you made through this problem?
