    hi,

i live in ny. i recently graduated and requested my college to send my transcript to the address thats listed on nasba when my grades come out. can someone familiar with the process explain to me what should i do next?

i registered an account on NASBA. should i pay the fee for all four exams prior my college sending my transcript, or should i wait until my transcript is sent and processed by NASBA first?

also, if someone has an outline on how this process should be performed please post!

    thank you!

I had this same question, but I'm from NJ. My adviser said that it's usually 7 to 10 business days after graduation that they start processing the updates to our transcripts, so I'm not sending my application in quite yet. My transcript won't reflect 120 credits until the update, so I don't want to risk the chance that I'll be rejected and lose a lot of my fees.

Do you know for sure that you are accepted to sit for the exam? I don't think it is possible for NY to know that until they get your transcripts.

I think your next step is to apply to NY for approval to sit for the exam. Once you get the approval you can pay for and schedule your tests.

    Good luck.

i actually don't know if i or will be accepted to sit for the exam. but i started the online application, and it asks for payment at the final step. i'm just wondering if i have to pay first and then send my transcript, or vice versa.

what's the typical steps that people do to apply for the exam?

From what I remember, you fill out the initial NY application. It can take about 10 weeks to process. You'll be notified if there is an academic deficiency.

On the NASBA side, register, but wait on paying for any exam parts until you are notified that you've been cleared. And consider paying for 1 exam at a time, b/c the exam scheduling is only valid for 6 months from the date of purchase/processing, unless you plan to take all four parts in 6 months.

    Couldn't pass again!

    For New York:

This explains the requirements for the initial license: https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpalic.htm

This is where all the forms you need to submit are found. It tells you when they need to be submitted. https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpaforms.htm

    hey smp73,

those links are for license. i don't want to apply for the license yet. i would like to take the exams first. after passing all four, and then completing the 150 credit requirement, i'd have to work for 1 year in a certified firm to be eligible for licensure.

therefore, can i just apply for the exam first on NASBA and take the exam without filing the initial license application?

@derf: I submitted forms 1 and 2 initially, to make sure everything was in line with my education. (long story but because my major was not technically accounting there had been problems getting it through for some of my peers) I then applied through NASBA. Once I passed all four I submitted 4 and 4B.

Are you working now? You may meet the experience requirement by the time you are finished with the exams.

If you have other questions it might just be best to call and ask:https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpacontact.htm

Don't look at the NY State Education Department site, that just confused me so much more because it didn't clearly distinguish between the forms you need to send in for your NTS versus the forms you need to send in to receive your license once you've passed the exam/have a year of work experience.

    All I did was:

    1) Sent my official transcript to the address listed on NASBA

    2) Applied with CPA Examination Services (paid application plus NTS fees)

This is all you need to do, I submitted both on the same day. I was 100% I met with the education requirements, so I'm not sure if you should wait to hear back before paying the application fees. I received my NTSs about 2 weeks later.

Whatever you do, do NOT pay for all 4 exams at once. Then you'd have to take all 4 before they expire and I'm not sure how long a NTS is valid for in NY. Make sure you've been approved to sit for the exams then register for no more than 2.

I somewhat agree with the last post. NY NTS's are valid for 6 months. It really depends on your study plan. I applied for all 4 at once and plan to take 3 in the Jul/Aug window and the last in October. If you're home for the summer and doing nothing but studying I think this is perfectly reasonable. If you don't apply for all 4, you'll need to pay an additional application fee when you submit for your remaining NTS's. Again, it really depends on your study plan, you may save a couple hundred bucks by applying for all 4, but on the same note it'll be harder to pass on the first try this way.

thanks the last four posts were comforting!

@co10101; yeah that site is very confusing. and your exp has comforted my mind for the application process!
