Question about what state to get licensed in

    Hi everybody.

If you get your CPA license in one state and don’t meet the reciprocity requirements to get your CPA in another state, can you simply apply as an initial candidate for a CPA license in that other state? It seems the reciprocity requirements usually include working several years out of the past 10 as a CPA, but I won’t be able to meet those requirements. To get around this, I’m wondering if I can simply apply for a CPA in that second state as if I were first applying for my CPA? Does anyone know if this is possible? I’m assuming that if it is possible, I can simply transfer my scores used to get my initial CPA license to the state where I want to obtain a second CPA license? And then I would simply need to meet the other requirements for initial CPA licensure in that second state?

    REG - 93 (7/30/13)
    BEC - 90 (8/19/13)
    AUD - 98 (8/31/13)
    FAR - 84 (10/19/13)

I don't believe there are ANY states where the requirements for reciprocity are higher than the requirements for initial licensure. Meaning, if a state requires 2 years to transfer they also require the same for a new candidate and you wouldn't be at any advantage .

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

You would think that, mla1169, but that doesn't seem to be the case. For instance, check this out:

    https://www.accountingedu.org/south-carolina-cpa.html

In SC, you need one year of experience for your SC CPA license; however, it says under “Interstate Reciprocal License,” you need “at least four years of professional CPA experience in another state within the past ten years.”

I'm gonna make some calls in a bit and find out more what the exact rules are (in case I am misunderstanding them), but it seems like the reciprocity rules can be more difficult than initial licensure rules because of the difference in experience required.

    BEC - 90 (8/19/13)
    AUD - 98 (8/31/13)
    FAR - 84 (10/19/13)

You need to read more of the reciprocity agreement. The only way you need the four years experience is if you don't meet the current education experience of SC. If you didn't meet the education requirements in the first place, applying as a new applicant won't help you. There are THREE ways to satisfy the requirements to transfer and the one you mention is only one of them.

The holder of a certificate, license, or permit issued under the laws of any state or territory of the US or any authority

of the US may demonstrate substantially equivalent education and experience by:

    (A) Documenting four (4) years of professional practices outside of South Carolina within ten (10) years

    immediately preceding the application; OR

    (B) Documenting the current education and experience requirements in effect in this State as set forth in 40-

    2-35; OR

    (C) Documenting that the education requirements for the certificate, license, or permit from another

jurisdiction were the same as the requirements in South Carolina on the date of original licensure.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I know Texas requires an approved ethics course at one of their APPROVED Texas universities. It's annoying, but fits the Texas “high and mighty” attitude. 🙂

mla1169, you are right! I was just using the information provided in that section, but I called the state's board of accountancy to verify before I read your follow-up post and they confirmed what you said. I was worried that I was going to be stuck in some sort of CPA purgatory, being licensed in one state and not being able to gain licensure in the state where I was working due to having not met the 4/10 requirements, but it sounds like that is not the case!

    Thanks for your help, everyone!
