Question about Tennessee License process

I’ve passed the 4 sections and the ethics exam. By reading on the TN BOA website, they send a “welcome packet” once they receive confirmation of the candidate completing the CPA and ethics exam. I guess the “welcome packet” contains the application for license.

So my question is for TN CPA’s. How long does it take to receive the “welcome packet” after you pass and how long does it take the BOA to approve the license? Thanks.n

In TN as well. Finished last section in November, passed Ethics in last week. Nothing from the state yet. Now I have to find someone to sign off on my experience. Any suggestions? I work for a private company and need a CPA to sign off.n

rcfs1834 – No unfortunately there are no CPAs at our firm. I'm the Controller and report directly to the President. We are a rather small company – less than 100 employees. Any suggestions?n

I took my last section on 11/19/10 and received my final grade just before Christmas. I passed the ethics exam on 1/13/11. I received my application from the Tennessee State Board of Accountancy yesterday. I did talk to the woman over the ethics exam at the TSCPA on the phone and we exchanged a few e-mails during a waiting period to purchase the exam because they were sold out, so maybe she helped me out somehow after I finished the ethics exam. Good luck, hopefully you will receive your application in the mail sometime this week?

CPL – does your company use a CPA firm for an audit, review, compilation, or tax return services? If so, you may be able to get someone from the CPA firm you deal with to sign off on your as they would have direct knowledge of your employment and experience. If that doesn't work for you I would probably try one of my college professors.n

No package for me either. I called today and was told they have it – they just have not put the pieces together to mail out. Also I do have our audit firm (partner) reviewing the experience affidavit. Keeping my fingers crossed!n

Hey guys – great news. The audit partner of our CPA audit firm signed off on my affidavit. I sent it to the State (TN) yesterday. I also called because I still have not received my welcome package and was told they had all the information, but need to “put it together” for mailing. In addition, I asked how long it would take for us to receive our license number and I was told Exec Dir will be out for the next couple of weeks due to some minor surgery. I was told it “typically” takes 2 to 4 weeks to get the applications processed. So unfortunately, we may be looking at 4 to 6 weeks.

I must say that while this type of waiting is difficult – it is nothing like waiting on a score!n

@CPL- what kind of affidavit did you have? I haven't passed all parts yet, but I'm curious about the certification process since I too am in TN. Do all the forms not come in the welcome packet or did you just type up some type of work confirmation and had the audit CPA sign to verify your work history? The reason I am asking is that at my company there is no CPA. However, on the side I do some extra work for a CPA firm and thought one of them would sign my work experience. I was wondering if it was a standard form or something you create yourself? Thanks!n

@Acowntint – They have the affidavit for experience on the state board of accountancy's website, but its also included on your application for licensure they send you once the state board has received the passing scores for both the CPA exam and the ethics exam.

After you pass everything just wait for the state board to mail you the application and everything is own there that you need to fill out.n
