Qualifying to sit in Florida

    Hi everyone,

I just moved to Florida a couple of months ago so my other half could start a PhD program. I was ready to sit in our old state, but I need a few more credits to qualify here, and I would like to take them online because I’m working full time and we have a toddler. Here’s the problem: I can’t get a straight answer out of the BOA as to whether or not online classes count, and internet searches give me contradictory answers. I’d like to take the credits at Lousiana State, UNA, or UWF, since they have good and inexpensive programs, but I would like to make sure they’ll count before I waste my time and money.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you.

I believe those programs do count. You can email this address with the school and the course description to see if it is counts towards your license. CPA.Applications@myfloridalicense.com. That way you will also have it in writing in case they tell you something different when you actually apply.

I received confirmation that UCLA Extension program classes count and I have been taking those since passing the CPA exam to finish my license requirements. Each class is around $650 and they have a good selection of online classes and a no hassle enrollment process.

    rbrown15,

I live in FL and took my entire degree program online and all my credits were accepted by the board. Just make sure the classification of each course matches the Jr./Sr. requirements that they have, as some universities do not classify certain classes the same way (IE business law). Other than that, any accredited schooling will count.

    FAR: 76
    AUD: 88
    BEC: 89

    Hey thanks, mamabear and mabancroft!

I appreciate it. I've sent an email with the class listings.

mabancroft, what school did you go to?

I'm rather frustrated with the process. I thought I'd be applying to sit this fall and now I'm not. But we got a full fellowship for the doctorate, so we came down here. I love it, though, even if it will take me longer to finish!

I took it online through a school in CT called Post University, which was more about “buying” a degree than earning one. Literally had to teach myself everything I know about accounting..

Florida is definitely funny about their licensing process, but I guess in the end the weather is worth the extra effort (at least in the winter).

    FAR: 76
    AUD: 88
    BEC: 89
