Canadian CA here – just found out today I passed the IQEX/Reg (yay!) which means I am ready to apply to a state.

A few deets that might help:

    – working in audit in Canada for a big 4, so CPE (we get tons to meet the Canadian CA requirements) and experience requirements signoffs (even if it needs a US CPA to signoff we have some partners with that here) are not an issue

    – I have a US SSN (worked in NY/NJ for a few months) so not an issue there either

    – I dont intend to work in any of the states as a CPA yet – otherwise I’d obviously need the license in that state.

    What state would you recommend?

A state with low CPE requirements and fees (in case i ever leave the big 4 and have to out of pocket it) would be ideal. 🙂

    An update!

So far it looks Illinois is winning the race:

    – lax CPE requirements compared to other states like AZ, NJ, NY, CA, FL,… (like no requirements of 4 hrs ethics that is state-specific or 72 hrs in audit, etc)

    – it helps that CPE is triennial w no annual min,

    – no CPE for first tri-ennial period – i.e. till 9/30/2015

    – fees are commensurate with other states @ $120/3yrs renewal. Initial fees are commensurate too.

    – no additional notary, criminal check and educational assessment costs outside of initial application fee

    – simple online procedure to submit documents to them

    What do you guys think?

    A new challenger comes:

    Montana!!

2 tier state, so I could just pay my $75/yr, use the CPA designation and no CPE to worry about until I look to perform servies in MT or for substantial equivalency to another state (need active license) and then you can just pay another $75 + show 40 CPE hrs/yr to do that.

Waiting to hear from board whether can use CPA letters with just the certificate.

    Another update on Montana:

As suspected, obtaining just the certificate would not allow me to hold myself out as a CPA. Here is the wording from the BOA:

A certificate does not allow you to practice or use the CPA designation.

In order to practice and hold yourself out as a CPA in Montana you need the Permit to Practice.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me.

    Thanks you:

@testernav123 – I wrote IQEX recently as well. Just wanted to ask you as to how your application went with Illinois? Does that certification allow you to use “CPA” designation with your name?

I just passed the IQEX (REG Section) today, and can qualify to get my licence for my CPA. Testernav123 or CPA_002 were you guys able to find out which state is the best one to go with?

I am a Chartered Accountant and am thinking Illinois or Colorado?

Any other help would be great too 🙂

    Hey IQEX candidates,

Just giving you an update. I decided to choose Illinois as the state the I wanted to be licensed. I was certified very quickly, but getting licensed took a long time! They were very good when I would call them up to ask how my license was faring.

I finally called again today, and David, possibly the most professional well-spoken man you'll ever meet told me that I was officially licensed today!

So, I would highly recommend Illinois.
