Obtaining a CPA license in Texas with a misdemeanor theft background

Does anyone know if it’s possible to obtain a CPA license in TX with a misdemeanor? I have been accepted to sit for the exams, but am very curious if I will be approved once I pass. I made a dumb mistake when I was 18 (more than 14 years ago) and afraid it is back to haunt me.

I think your state will do a background check anyway. But I would make sure this is not in the felony class. I am not sure if misdenmeanors will show up, but a felony certainly will. If it does you might need an attorney advice on how to handle it.

Felonies will prevent you from getting your license. I don't believe a misdemeanor will (lets be honest, a lot of people get one at some point in college). However, I'd do a consult with a lawyer to figure it out. Shouldn't be too expensive because they'll have a para look it up in 10-15 minutes.

You can contact your state board and ask as well.

I looked up CPA's with pending accusation against them in CA and noticed some applicants on the list. One was denied a license due to DUI. I thought DUI were misdemeanors, but apparently they can be felonies. And I think this particular applicant had multiples. But I couldn't help but think how bad it would be to get through this horrible exam, only to be denied licensure.

Like the others said, I don't think misdemeanors apply, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out ahead of time and/or seek legal advice.

I will call the TSBPA and verify for sure. I do know that you will have to complete some type of paperwork about it though. But your best bet is to call TSBPA and find out for sure. Good Luck to you!!

As long as you disclose it and don't try to hide it – you should be good to go. Based on previous experience 🙂

@ellet999: You'll have to write a statement about the crime in order to become eligible to sit for the exam. I have 3 misdemeanors from high school and I just received my certificate from TSBPA so it's not a big deal. My statements just described the crime, what happened as a result, and how you've changed. Good luck!

I think there's a statute of limitations…and most people would understand that you were a young, dumb kid and regret it. I wouldn't let this stop you.
