Good afternoon everyone. I am trying to get my accounting and business requirements to be able to sit for the NYS CPA exam. My undergrad is in Applied Math with no accounting or business classes taking. Since I work full time and about to be married I have been looking at online accounting programs.

My main question is this. In NYS website it states that one of the options is a Macc that is aacsb in both business and accounting. I have found University of Alabama Birmingham to be one option. Other options are only aacsb in business. The former is more expensive than the latter.

If I take the business only aacsb Macc program will I still need to take additional business classes to sit for exam? Last question I have is are the out of state online Macc programs from accredited public universities accepted by NYS CPA? I have tried emailing and calling the NYS office to no avail. Thank you very much.

From my read of the NYS website ( https://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpalic.htm#edu ), completing a MAcc from a college that is AACSB accredited for business but not for accounting won't help you out under the AACSB option, as it requires AACSB business *and* accounting both. So, if you want to an AACSB in business-only school, you'd have to meet the 33 in accounting and 36 in business with 150 total rule. Also, I'm not sure that the AACSB in business would help you any over a simply regionally accredited school – you might be paying for an accreditation that, as far as NYS CPA is concerned, you don't need (though it may be helpful for other purposes in the future).

So, looks like your best bet is something that is business and accounting both through AACSB – like University of Alabama Birmingham – otherwise you'll need to get both business and accounting credits.

P. S. I don't see anything on the NYS site which indicates an AACSB accredited for business and accounting degree from out of state would be a problem, so I do think the AL degree would work if you got it.

Yea reading further into it it does seem that University of Alabama Birmingham will knock two birds with one stone. I appreciate the quick response.

I did consider it. My concentration was in financial mathematics so we did have statistics in our program. The problem for me and being an actuary was that the quantitative nature while fun at first did not interest me as much. The financial part of the program did interest me and is the reason why I want to pursue accounting.
