So, I’m hopefully 3/4 of the way done with the exam with my last part scheduled for 4/17. Thinking ahead to actually getting licensed, I have a bit of an issue. North Carolina wants me to have:

Three certificates of good moral character signed by properly licensed CPAs must be submitted with the application for a CPA certificate.

I’ve never worked at a CPA firm, or even *for* a CPA. I have enough general accounting experience to meet licensing requirements (just need 4 years and I have 20+), but I’m lacking in North Carolina CPA friends/colleagues! I’m sure I could go rub elbows with some CPA’s at the state society events, but the form also asks how long they’ve known me. Any idea how big of an issue this will be? I do know some CPA’s in MD, but none here in NC.

I guess I should start networking ASAP!

I ran into the same problem when I was applying to sit for the exam in PA.

I had 3 non-CPA friends sign the form and I attached a detailed note explaining the circumstances. They accepted it without asking any questions.

My application form was signed by three non-CPA's (CPA not required for that part), however to apply for my license I need three CPA's to fill out this form:

Suggested references must be CPAs and may include, but are not restricted to, the following groups: instructors, employers, fellow employees, fellow NCACPA chapter members, neighbors, and public officials. The Board will not accept references from persons related by blood or marriage. Persons signing certificates are expected to have known the applicant for a sufficient period of time to make an evaluation of his/her moral character and to be familiar with the applicant's lifestyle outside of the classroom or workplace.

I'll probably give them a call when I get closer to that step, but in the meantime I guess I'd better start going to NCACPA networking events!

I'm in SC but working in NC. Call the NCACPA and talk to them. I would become a member of the NCACPA. They have networking events all the time; luncheons, meetings, etc.
