A little background on the guy behind the screen. I am a current CPA candidate with over 150 credits and have already taken and passed one part of the exam. I have also already paid for my second part through the Maryland DLLR (our licensing agency) for FAR and have until February to take it.

I have been applying for a lot of jobs throughout MD and the entire east coast and am 99% sure I am receiving an offer from a company in NYC. Great news for me, its what I’ve been wanting. Unfortunately, it seems like there is going to be some sort of long process or issue with my CPA test taking. I’ve already paid for FAR so I am definitely going to take that down here in Maryland in November.

The issue comes with the rest of the parts. I have no clue what to do and cant find any answers through research online. I believe there might be two options but I’m not sure. A friend of mine mentioned taking the remainder of the exams in MD and filing for a reciprocal license in NY once I passed. Is this a possibility? I don’t know if you can get the license without actually working/living in the State? Would my other option be to simply wait until i get to NY and apply in that STate? I don’t want to lose my $200 for FAR without actually giving it a go.

Please help another71 community! I have no clue what to do!

DISCLAIMER: I am not 100% sure about anything I'm about to say to you. My motive is to be as supportive as possible during what is probably an extremely stressful time for you.

Have you tried emailing the NY board with your questions? I've had plenty of concerns regarding exams and licensing and the CO board was extremely helpful. From the NY board's site:

“If you intend to take all or part of the CPA examination in New York, you must:

•Apply to CPA Examination Services to sit for the examination by submitting the First-Time Application for the Uniform CPA Examination and the application fee to CPA Examination Services.

•Provide CPA Examination Services with appropriate documentation so that they can review your education to sit for the examination. If you attended a New York registered program or an AACSB accredited accounting program give your school registrar a copy of CPA Examination Services’ Registered Program Form. They will complete the form and return it to CPA Examination Services. If you did not attend a New York registered program or an AACSB accredited accounting program, have your college or university submit copies of your official transcript directly to CPA Examination Services on your behalf. Upon receipt, CPA Examination Services will evaluate your education to sit for the exam.”

    Best of luck to you!

Plenty of people get their licenses in states other than the one they live in. You'll need to transfer it to NY to be able to use the title in that state which it seems like you already know. You can even take the exams at a prometric in NY while a MD candidate.

You'll just want to look into the reciprocity agreement between NY and MD. Make sure theres no additional requirements that you will need to fulfill.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.
