Most demanding state requirements and reciprocity issues

I am sitting for the CPA exam in the state of Alabama. Alabama requires 150 hours plus the one year of experience under a licensed CPA to get your certification activated.

Do any states have more demanding requirements than this? Is there any state that I would have problems wiht reciprocity in?

Just wondering because I would like to work for a Big 4 and location is not important… unless of course I can’t get reciprocity/lead engagements one day.

    10/13/13 - FAR *PASSED* 76
    12/01/13 - AUD *PASSED* 84
    01/09/14 - BEC *PASSED* 84
    02/27/14 - REG *PASSED* 81

    IL has the same requirements.

I think there might be some states that requires a masters degree? Maybe someone else can verify that.

Florida has the same requirements. CA and some other states require you to pass an ethics exam.

Texas has the same requirements as well as 3 hours of an ethics class in the 150 hours. They are super picky about what qualifies too (pretty much any ethics class taken outside of a pre-approved school will not be accepted). I moved there from California after I got my MAcc @ SDSU and had to take an ethics class at a local university before I qualified to take the exam. One of my co-workers moved to Texas after she had her CPA from Missouri and had to do an ethics CPE in addition to the normally required paperwork to have her license changed to Texas.

    REG - 86
    FAR - 80
    BEC - 79
    AUD - 92...I'm done woohoo!

    Licensed CPA since Feb. 2014

    @Shel.

I'm in the same boat as your friend. I will have (hopefully) passed my exams in MO. I start my job in TX Jan 6th; I have to transfer to TN to satisfy the experience requirement as my state has a “residency” requirement and I can't gain the experience if I don't live in the state. After I get my TN license THEN I can transfer to TX, but have that ethics course requirement. You may ask why I don't just transfer to TX at first, well, turns out they won't take any of my scores because I sat 30 days before I had 150 hours, which is allowed in my state and not in theirs; but, they will take a license under reciprocity.

I was told you HAD to take the course at the university, but I”m glad to hear it's only a CPE course and I”m sure the Big 4 offer that in house.

When I talked to the lady at the TX state board, she said it was a class at a uni, PERIOD. However, you are telling me your friend took a CPE course and it worked, not to mention my boss just transferred his license to TX and only took a CPE course. I was arguing with this lady on the phone, stating that it's a bit ridiculous that people who have held their license for years still have to satisfy the TX requirement.

We can thank Enron for the stiff requirements in Texas.

UCMCPA- Beware that TSBPA may tell you a different response every time you call. Classes can be taken at a community college. Austin Community College offers a professional certificate program that produces dozens of CPAs each year.

There are two ethics courses required in Texas. The first is a 3 hour ethics class (part of the 150 hour requirement) to qualify to sit for the exams and then a 4 hour CPE style course to become licensed.

Well, I”ve never had a ethics course, so looks like I may be stuck taking that then.
