Meeting Education Requirements (in NC and in general)

Has anyone ever had any borderline overlapping accounting classes but was still approved to sit for the exams and/or get licensure? Particularly in NC? If someone did get approved to sit for exams in NC, what was your experience like with the application process? I think they basically have 1 lady, Phyllis, who is the guru there. Everything seems to go through her then of course a few other people sign off.

I’m just a little worried because I plan to apply on 9/2 because it’s within 120 days of finishing my requirements. However, if my 2 MBA classes in accounting overlap my community college accounting classes, I’ll have to wait until next year to sit. I sent Phyllis an e-mail with my class list to see if she can provide some guidance. If I need more credits I can pick them up now and not have to wait. But September is too late.

The MBA class I’m particularly worried about is Presentation and Interpretation of Financial Statements. It’s mainly about the statements, but it goes a lot deeper into explaining what items have predictive value that isn’t implicitly stated. My other MBA class is Cost Management Systems and I’m hoping that doesn’t overlap with Managerial Accounting. Not so worried about this one though since one is cost and one is managerial. But I think they do have a lot of similarities.

I applied in February 2013 and got approved within a day. The process for me I think was extremely fast. I was still in my last semester and they granted me the nts provided I submit my final transcript within 120 days of receiving the letter.

Thanks NC CPA for the feedback. Sounds promising, like they might not be a stickler. But your courses could have been very distinctive. I guess we'll see!

I wish you luck. They weren't very nice to me. Anything with “financial” in the title was declined automatically. A few of my professors were supposed to send letters stating the acceptability of a couple other MBA classes, but I still had to take two extra classes which I'm wrapping up now. Then back to the aggravating process of communicating with them to see if I can FINALLY sit. (Hopefully). Best wishes!

@Kristina, sorry for what you've had to go through and thanks for the feedback. I am so hoping that I don't have to go through the same thing. I'm thinking of going ahead and registering for another class anyway just so I can be sure I have the credits needed. Hopefully I can find an easy one that won't overload me since I'll be studying and taking exams during the semester.

I guess my undergrad in acct which was in compliance with state requirements helped me to get approved so quickly.
