Maryland CPA Question

I am not 100% sure yet if I have passed all four sections but I am moving forward with confidence that I have. I have ordered and will be taking the AICPA ethics exam shortly. My question is, how long does it take after receiving your passing grade to receive a letter from the MD Board of Accountancy and how long after sending them all the remaining info (ethics grade, work experience form) does it take to receive your certificate?

    FAR - 87
    REG - 82
    BEC - 82
    REG - 90

I am in Maryland and I mailed in my work experience form and ethics certificate on Thursday and received an email this morning with my registration number and the link to order the certificate. The email stated I should show up on the CPA public query in 2 days. Didn't take long at all. As for getting the physical certificate, I've heard from some friends that it can take a few months.

I finished my last test and am waiting for my ethics CD to come in. This info will be useful toe as well.

For the experience I have to use a former employer. Should I complete my parts and then print, sign, and mail to them? Or should I complete my parts and email it over then sign once they have completed their section?

    Thanks @ashlienicole

How much is the ethics course? Do you have to buy it through the board or can I order it on the AICPA website?

    Hi all…

I called the MD Board this morning with respect to a couple of these questions:

    1) Generally the board meets on the first Thursday of every month to review/approve requests for licensure by candidates who have completed the CPA exam, have the work experience, and passed the AICPA Ethics course. This might be done more frequently now; I'm not sure. I'm also not sure how long it takes to receive the actual hard copy certificate, but your CPA license number should be issued shortly after approval of your application by the board.

    2) With respect to the ethics course/work experience… the ethics course completion certificate should be mailed (or e-mailed) to the address specified on the web page, which is viewable after you have passed all four sections… it says something of the nature “Click here to see what you need to do to complete requirements to be licensed as a CPA in public practice in Maryland”. The practical work experience form must be completed by you (Parts 1 and 3, and they must be typed), and then forwarded to your endorser, who completes Part 2 (again, must be typed). The endorser then sends the form into the MD State Board.

    3) The ethics course should be purchased from the AICPA website. If you're not an AICPA member, it's $156 PLUS shipping PLUS sales tax, so basically the price of taking a 5th section of the CPA exam.

If you need additional information, you can always call the board… the woman with whom I spoke seemed quite helpful.

I thought the board only met on the first Thursday of the month, but like I said I got an email this morning saying my application had been approved and I didn't even put my stuff in the mail until Thursday June 6th.

@ashliencole – I certainly hope that is the case for the rest of us. I wasn't planning on another MD Board review date until the beginning of July, but I guess I'll try to get that ethics course done ASAP now.

    Thanks!

I wasn't expecting to hear back until July either. It was a nice surprise when I got that email. Let us know how it goes!

Wanted to post a completely different experience here:

Submitted my application in late March, and it's been awhile and still no email from the State Board saying anything about clicking a link to register. I'd heard very different stories about MD licensing: some received their email to register in about a week, others waited for as long as a year. I'm going into the 5th month of waiting right now. Thankfully the Board has been very helpful with figuring out what's going on.

NWATSB, I just got the pdf of my license last week and the website actually told me that that was all I was going to get. (I guess they were wrong.) When did you get your certificate?

    Quick question:

After passing all sections of the exam should I expect anything from the MD board in the mail? Or is everything done via e-mail/online, as far as instructions on how to proceed are concerned? Also, will they ever send me copies of my passing score reports?

    Thank you ahead of time.

You should not expect to receive any notice from the Board, just send in your work experience and ethics certificate ASAP. Check here for links to the forms and my timeline: https://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum/topic/maryland-cpa-license-requirments

    Thank you for your response.

Regarding work experience, my direct supervisor, our CFO, is an inactive CPA. We do have external auditors come in and conduct an annual review. The engagement partner for the firm that conducts the review is a CPA. Does MD allow a CPA who is not a direct supervisor sign off on work experience? I believe this is acceptable, but I just wanted to confirm.
