IL Licensing Process

    Hey All,

I found over the weekend that I passed the exam and I couldn’t be happier! Now onto the final step of this long, ridiculous process – licensing. I’ve just got a few questions for those that have gone through it.

1- This is the correct form, right? https://www.idfpr.com/renewals/apply/forms/lcpa.pdf

2 – Do I need to wait for my exam scores to come in the mail? (I assume that’s when they’re final? It’s usually been 2-3 weeks after the release online)

3 – I’ve been working under a CPA for the past year and a half so the experience should be covered. I graduated grad school in December 2012 though – does that mean I have to wait until this December for my “1 year of experience” to be completed?

4 – Anything else I need to know? I just want to get licensed and have this entire thing behind me.

    “(225 ILCS 450/14) (from Ch. 111, par. 5515)

(Section scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2014)

Sec. 14. Qualifications. The Department may license as licensed certified public accountants the following:

    (a) All persons who have received certificates as certified public accountants from the Board or who hereafter receive registrations as registered certified public accountants from the Department who have had at least one year of full-time experience, or its equivalent, providing any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax, or consulting skills, which may be gained through employment in government, industry, academia, or public practice. “

I've seen that “experience has to be earned after education requirements are met” thing thrown around but I can't actually find it on the ILCS site. I read more of that act than I should have and now know a lot of rules governing licensed illinois cpas but yeah, I'm in the dark on this.

    Does anyone know?

See the end of #4 on p. 2 of the IL CPA Licensure application. https://www.idfpr.com/renewals/apply/forms/lcpa.pdf

I finished my education requirements in November of 2012, so i am waiting until then to apply. The application fee is non-refundable. I would assume that if you apply and they say you don't have enough experience since meeting the education requirements, they keep your $120 and make you reapply. Maybe not.

I would maybe just call them up and ask.

Also, I believe you need to wait until the ILBOA approves the provisional score (should happen in September), and then you need to ask ILBOA to send your scores to the IDFPR.

I believe there are previous, detailed threads about the IL process somewhere on A71.

If anyone in IL dealt with this experience after meeting education requirements thing and recently went through the licensing process, please chime in! I've looked through other threads and the question has been raised several times, but not answered. Thanks!

I'll be in the same boat, as I finished my educational requirements last April but I will (hopefully!) be done with the exams long before next April. Here is the language talking about the timing of work after educational requirement completion (look at the last sentence)

The Verification of Employment / Experience (VE-PAE) must be completed by your supervisor to document at least

one year of full-time experience providing any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest,

management advisory, financial advisory, tax, or consulting skills that may be gained through employment in

government, industry, academia, or public practice. The experience must have been gained after completion of the

education required to take the Uniform CPA Examination

@DJN – I guess I am wondering if anyone on A71 has prior experience with trying to apply prior to the 1 year mark for education experience. Will they simply deny the application? Put it on hold? Process it? Anyone that has dealt with this, please enlighten us!

@benkdevries – Oh, sorry! I misunderstand what you were looking to find out. Early… not enough coffee yet…

I believe ILBOA electronically transmits your scores to the IDFPR on the 1st and 15th of every month automatically upon completion of all your requirements. God I hope I'm not wrong…. I'm on about day 50 of 80 of waiting for my application to be processed by the IDFPR…

    AUD - 80 (05/23/2012)
    FAR - 75 (08/09/2012)
    BEC - 81 (12/05/2012)
    REG - 71 (10/16/2012); 70 (02/12/2013); 78 (04/08/2013)
    Ethics - 98
