How much time does it normally take IDFPR to process a license application? I’m an international candidate (don’t have a SSN) so I wasn’t able to apply online to become a Registered CPA. Last time I checked with IDFPR, they received my paper application on April 27 and it would take 4-6 weeks to process my application. In order to get an update on my application, I tried for the last couple of days to call by phone (2177828556) and e-mail FPR.PRFGROUP01@illinois.gov and I wasn’t able to get any response.

@xcaramel03x : As long as ILDPR has the scores, you can apply right away and get a license# immediately.

I would not recommend mail – if the application is lost, you're screwed.

I have my IL Certificate number yet the IDFPR online application system could not find my record. Does that mean ILBOE has not sent over my certificate number yet?

If we passed all 4 sections and our ethics section before June 30th, yet could not get registered due to ilboa not getting information over to IDFPR in time, will they be accomodating at back date our registrations?? Seems ridiculous that we could possibly get shut out of registering on a technicality like that.

ILBOA is now sending certifications 4 times a month until the deadline, so you may still stand a chance.

    Remember, register to RCPA online.

Here is a brainteaser for everyone. If I register in IL and am grandfathered in as a licensed CPA, what happens if I move to another state. Will I have to do the back CPE in order to get a license in that state or will current license cover that?

To anyone who has taken the AICPA ethics exam, how long did you study? Is it a timed exam? I just finished taking AUD, should i be able to pass this test without studying the AICPA materials? Trying to get registered before june 30th deadline. I have passed all 4 parts just need to complete the ethics exam. Thanks for any info.

@ppierce, so exam is not timed? you have time to look up answers? Thanks. I am hoping that as long as I send in a mailed registration postmarked before 6/30 that i should get in because everything will have been passed before the deadline.

@cra1068: Study? its open book. And this is the wrong thread for that.

And don't do it by mail! If the USPS loses your application you're dead.

@jpyoung10: check the website of the state you are planning to move to. There are more issues than just CPE. If you are an RCPA you won't transfer to an active license. Only if you are licensed as a regular CPA in Illinois (not RCPA) you may be able to transfer.

not sure if this helps, but here are some FAQs on the difference between licensure and registration:

    https://www.icpas.org/hc-licensing-registration.aspx?id=2842#I_am_a_CPA_but_not_currently_licensed._How_do_I_know_if_the_new__registration__requirement_applies_to_me?

i could be mistaken, but it sounds like registration has been offered between oct 1, 2006 through july 1, 2012 as a convenience for those not performing attest services or practicing before the irs (in the form of lower fees, no experience requirement, etc.) – applies to many of us in corporate accounting and finance functions. however, since registration availability is lapsing, it looks like all non-registered cpas must go through licensure requirements after july 1, 2012 and moving forward. if you have an active registration before this date, you can renew indefinitely (whoo hoo!!)

either way, without a license or registration, it is illegal to hold yourself out to be a cpa, even if you've passed all of the exams. you have to have one or the other, or you can face fines or jail time. it's nice to get the registration before the deadline so that you don't face the stricter requirements – but if you miss the deadline, it's not the end of the world. you can still get a license. don't sweat it.

that said, it is a pain to have the double process of passing all of the exams and then having to apply for registration/licensure through two separate organizations. i know the frustration well – it took me two two full months after passing the exam to be both certified and registered. hang in there!!

Registered CPA (RCPA) is for those who have no or insufficient CPA work experience to get the full license.

It is being phased out because all the other states have gotten rid of that. Once Illinois is gone, only 4 more states remain. And then the musical chairs continue.
