Disclaimer: I never plan to practice as a CPA or work at a firm. I just want it for career advancement at my company, and because of this I am taking the CPA exam as a New Mexico candidate even though I live in Texas. I don’t have a college ethics class therefore I am not eligible as a Texas Candidate but I meet all the other requirements.

How many of you are doing something similar? Heck, I’ve never even been to New Mexico, my co-worker recently did the same as he didn’t meet the Texas requirements as well so he completed his as a New Hampshire candidate.

Maybe one day I will take the college class and seek reciprocity in Texas.

I'm in the same boat. Live in Texas but sitting for Colorado. My undergrad and grad schools did not meet Texas standards for accreditation.

Live in Texas, but became licensed through Illinois, since I did not meet the ethics course requirement and one other class requirement specific to Texas. It seems that in Texas you will only qualify if you went to school in Texas since for some courses they only accept if it's only their approved list. I am in the process of applying for reciprocity though. Note to OP: you don't have to meet the Texas educational requirements if you have a CPA license in another state, so once you get your license in New Mexico, you can immediately apply for a Texas reciprocal license. If you've had your out-of-state license for less than 1 year, you don't have to have any CPE to get a Texas reciprocal license.

Thanks Greg, I wasn't aware of that. I've just started my journey for the CPA eagerly awaiting my first score release here in a few hours.

I should have done this when I was younger and fresh out of school, but have waited until I am 35 to start :).

Hey guys! My issue in Texas is that I work in the private industry and have no CPA at my company. I also never plan to work in public accounting..

I have already started testing in Texas with the Texas State Board. I think I found a work around where my company can engage a CPA to supervise me and that will meet the work experience requirement. (I'm currently the controller, the CFO resides in Canada and is a Chartered Accountant)

However, if I can't find a CPA for this type of situation, could I transfer the whole process to a different state? For example North Dakota just requires 1 year of experience, and it doesn't have to be under a CPA.

Assuming you meet all the other N.D. qualifications I wouldn't see any issues, but you might lose any tests you have taken already? (assuming you transfer in the middle, if you complete everything it might be easier). I would speak with someone in N.D. to confirm before jumping into it.

Just remember even when applying to TX through reciprocity you still need to take an approved ethics course within 6 months of the application for reciprocal licensure https://www.tsbpa.state.tx.us/pdffiles/l0003.pdf

I am testing through Indiana yet we moved to Mississippi, I do not have a class in Govt NFP that MS required. Also, it would cost more to license in MS than to go through Indiana.So I will Licence in Indiana and use reciprocity.

The Texas ethics course requirement for a reciprocal application can be a CPE-type online course that you can do in a few hours. Much less hassle than having to take a university course.
