Help! Notice of educational deficiency from MA Board

I just got a notice of deficiency. I sat for the exam in MA under the 120 hour rule, so had to have my educational qualifications evaluated. But I should meet the requirements under option 1 – I have a grad degree in accounting from an accredited university (and specifically waited until that was on my transcript!). Has this happened to anyone else? Am I going to have to pay them again to re-evaluate?

    I’m so pissed!

Hopefully you won't have to. I'll likely be finishing the CPA exam before the 150 in MA as well. Keep us updated.

I had this happen to me with a different state board. You should contact them to find out what exactly the issue was. Ideally, you can get someone on the phone so that you can communicate directly with that person and clear up any confusion they may have.

If they say that something is iffy about your transcript, have them scan it and email it to you, so you can be looking at what they're looking at and confirm that they're reading it correctly. If they are, then you can take it up with the Registrar at your university.

When this happened to me, it turned out that the person had misread my transcript (they neglected to look at an entire page of it).

If you're stuck, you might consider contacting your Accounting Dept at your University – usually there is some administrator who keeps abreast of the state requirements and has contacts at your State Board.

They did, mla1169 – they said I'm missing business ethics and several hours of accounting credits. I spoke to Barbara in the Mass Society office, and she said it sounds like they did not have my UMass MSA transcript (or maybe the one they got didn't have my degree conferral on it), because you don't need biz ethics unless you don't have a MSA. She suggested I call NASBA; thanks for the advice about getting it emailed back to me, impska, I will definitely try that to make sure they have the RIGHT transcript!

    Will keep y'all posted!

As an update – I spoke to someone at NASBA today and it sounds as if they only have the first page of my transcript from my MSA program. Not sure if that's because UMass only sent the first page, or because they didn't notice there was a page 2. But – I do not have to pay again, just send in another transcript. Fortunately, I ordered a bunch so I have some at home to send in.

Wish me luck! And here I thought passing the exam was the hardest part!
