First-time applicant with some questions

Hello! I’ve been out of school for almost a couple years now (graduated with a degree in business administration with a finance concentration, took undergrad level accounting courses) and decided to apply for the CPA exam in Wisconsin. According to the application document, I should request my transcripts be sent to the CPA Examination Services before submitting my first-time application. Should I just wait a few days before submitting my app or should I confirm that they received my transcripts first? What happens when you fail to meet the educational requirements? Do you forfeit the application and registration fees?

Also, I only applied for the FAR section. Being out of school for awhile has left my brain a bit rusty. From what I’ve read, FAR and REG tend be the most difficult sections to prepare for. Was it a wise decision on my part to choose to sit for only 1 section in the next testing window available to me? I am planning to do the same for REG as well, then take AUD and BEC in the 3rd window. Thanks for taking the time to read my inquiries!

You should send them everything – transcripts (requested from educational institution) and application. I don't know why but WI is notorious for “losing transcripts”. I had mine originally sent when I was in Grad school and applying and they “never received it” so they just never issued my NTS…others have had scores held because their transcripts were not received as well.

The state has the educational requirements posted on the website, as long as you are in compliance with what it says there shouldn't even be a concern that your education wouldn't ‘qualify'.

I would follow up numerous times!! Make sure they've received everything after a few weeks of sending everything off. It takes a long time to receive your first NTS so be prepared to wait a good 6-8 weeks.

You have to remember that as of January 1, 2011 the exam is changing a bit in terms of content.

It took me about 6 weeks to get my NTS. So far I have taken 3 or 4 parts and I would not recomend taking FAR first. That being said, it doesnt mean you wont do well. Just make sure you give FAR your full attention. I think it was the hardest of the 3 sections(due to the quantity of materail) I have taken so far. There is no such thing as overstudying for FAR.

Also as slow as NASBA is I would send everything at once. I am one of those people who got my transcript “missfiled” so its best to send every thing and then call(do it a few times, since I know from experience you will get different ans depending on who to speak with).

    Good Luck

    AUD 89
    BEC 84
    FAR 87
    REG 94!! ALL DONE

Thanks for the advice and your experiences. I definitely won't be underestimating FAR and plan on preparing like hell for it!

Send it all in at the same time. I am the campagin treasurer for a State Rep, and he called in a favor with the Dept of Bus & Prof Regulation with the state and I had mine within 2 weeks so I could call and get my NTS. Ive heard it usually takes 6-8 weeks otherwise

    BEC - 86
    AUD - 94
    REG - 88
    FAR - 89

Lucky! I noticed you can apply for the exam online in Wisconsin now. I don't recall being able to do that a couple days ago. Saved me a trip to the post office 🙂

    dolcetto,

Try to take FAR and get it out of the way before the 18 month clock starts ticking. If you can, take 2 exams per window. If I had to do it all over again, that's what I would do. I've only got two more windows until I start losing credit. It goes by fast.

I took FAR first, but that's because I felt like out of the 4, it would be my “strength.” And…it was harder than I expected. But I'm glad I started on it first. I'm working on AUD now, and it seems so much easier (even though the material is a lot more “boring” in my opinion). I would suggest taking 2 exams in one window to give you plenty of time to pass without losing credit in 18 months.

    FAR - 92 --- AUD - 87 --- REG - 80 --- BEC - 87

I recently submitted my application to CA accountancy board. I want to plan out my exam over a 1 year period. Next January I want to return to school for my MBA. My question is this, Do you have to pay 50 dollars each time you want to take an exam to the board and if so how far in advance would you need to submit to sit at the next window? I dont plan on sitting for all sections in one sitting.

    @Barb74

Yes you need to pay $50.00 every time you get an NTS. I suggest that you pay for 2 exams at a time and this will give you enough time (9 months) to take the 2 exams before your NTS expired. It takes 2-3 weeks to apply again for a new NTS but you do not need to submit any requirements anymore.

I took one section every window and took me 9 months to finish the 4 sections. I applied for 2 NTS last year. I suggest you take the first exam that you think is your weakest area. I took BEC to get it out of the way. You should also take FAR before Auditing because the exam format in Auditing is more or less like FAR ( simulation portion).

    BEC 2/8/10 - 75 (studied hard & prayed less)
REG 5/15/10 - 88 (studied less but prayed hard)
AUDITING 8/9/10 - 79 (studied hard and prayed hard)
FAR 11/30/10 - 79 (studied hard and prayed hard) Thanks GOD! I'm DONE
