    Hi Everyone,

I would appreciate any insight to the following question.
I have currently worked with my employer for 7 years but recently decided a second attempt at CPA. I still have to do 6 classes for accounting pre- reqs and then submit my letter of intent and then sit for my CPA Exam.

But the 1 year experience requirement is always hanging over my head because I do not exactly work under a CPA. Also I would like to find another position where I can do more than what im doing now and work under a CPA who signs off for me.

So currently I was planning on taking two classes the next semester..but the more I think about it…I feel maybe I should take only one class and tackle this job change project once and for all. I mean even if I pass I STILL need a CPA to sign off on my experience and no I dont have that critical requirement met yet.

I really need to make a decision regarding my school schedule within the next week and I am anxious over how this job change thing will work out..i mean I have to find a position under a CPA and let them know that I am looking for someone who can sign off on my experience after a year and in return i plan on staying with the company as a practicing CPA. AHHHH…just too much to think about.

But i cannot avoid this issue anymore…sooner or later I have to face it…so do you think I should cut it down to 1 class IN HOPES that I am successful at finding a job under a CPA…I mean easier said than done…I feel….confused…torn….

Pretty much I feel like I have to break up with someone..but i am avoiding it..and then I have to find a more suitable partner…and hope that partner has everything I want…something like that.

Considering the economy now a days…i dont know if its risky to change jobs..i mean…i have job security here…finding a new one would be like taking a big leap…I dont know what to do.

In my state a CPA that knows you are doing work in accounting can sign off on you. You do not have to work directly under them.

    Aspen,

I am assuming you are applying in Colorado? I am also a CO applicant and was told by NASBA that I could get my CPA work signed off by out CAO, although I am a couple rungs down on the ladder from him. (This is of course ultimately up to the Colorado State Board though, so you may confirm with them.) As long as the person is aware of your job duties and familiar with your work results. If you are in Industry as well, this may be an option for you if there are any CPA's within your orgstruct.

    AspenCookie,

2 cents. Will your current employer CARE if you study during work hours? Can you perform your current job well even if you focus on your CPA studying or classes? If so, stay. Having a job is GREAT. I would try to finish those classes first and then start worrying for another job. Maybe when you're allowed to sit, I would try to start applying to companies that would encourage your CPA pursuit. At least when they ask you, you can tell your future employer that you have already taken steps to move towards the CPA.

I agree with hasy. I think you should at least be CPA eligible before you try to find a new job. It sounds like you have quite a bit of time before you are able to start sitting for the CPA exams. These exams a tough and that's putting it lightly. I am so happy that my boss understands how hard it is and really cuts me some slack. Some days I am so distracted at work because this exam has all of my attention.
